TIMING PROCEDURE

Before checking and adjusting ignition timing, it is necessary to confirm that the throttle sensor idle switch is "ON" using the following procedure:

Throttle Sensor Adjustment:

THROTTLE SENSOR IDLE SWITCH ADJUSTMENT

1. Remove throttle sensor connector.
2. There should be continuity between throttle sensor terminals "4" and "3" when throttle is fully closed.
3. Insert a thickness gauge (0.55mm, 0.0217in) between throttle body stopper screw and stopper (portion "G") (this corresponds to a throttle opening of 1.5°). Check that continuity still exists.
4. Replace first thickness gauge with a second (0.92mm, 0.0362in) (this corresponds to a throttle opening of 2.5°). There should be no continuity.
4. If adjustment is needed, loosen two screws securing throttle sensor to throttle chamber and adjust until the above conditions are met.
5. If correct adjustment cannot be made, replace throttle sensor.

Timing Marks:

IGNITION TIMING ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE

1. Warm up engine.
2. Confirm that throttle sensor idle switch is "ON."
3. Connect Test Mode connector (green connector) located in trunk compartment, RH side near seat.
4. Hook up timing light, start engine, set idle speed to specification and check timing.
5. If adjustment is needed, loosen 6mm distributor plate mounting bolts.
6. Turn distributor clockwise to advance timing and counterclockwise to retard timing.
7. When adjustment is complete, tighten bolts and recheck timing.
8. Turn off engine and disconnect Test Mode connector.

Ignition Timing (BTDC):

Manual Transmission: 20°/700 rpm
Automatic Transmission: 20°/800 rpm
