SUBJECT: FIRST GEAR DISENGAGEMENT

THIS SERVICE BULLETIN SUPERSEDES AND CANCELS SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER 03-39-88, RELEASE DATE OF 7-19-88.

This Bulletin is for Information Only

If you encounter a customer complaint of first gear becoming disengaged while driving, the cause may be clearance between the 1st driven gear and the pinion shaft bushing. Referring to the applicable Service Manual, follow the instructions below to measure and install the 1st driven gear and the 1st - 2nd driven gear bushing.

^ Remove the transmission from the vehicle according to section 2-11.
^ Disassemble the transmission according to section 3-1.
^ Replace the 1st - 2nd driven gear bushing with part number 32249AA002 according to section 3-1.
^ Measure the outside diameter of the bushing at three different locations (120 degrees apart). Use the greatest of the three measurements.

Using the chart below and the bushing measurement, select a 1st driven gear which will have a gear to bushing clearance of 0.023 - 0.060 mm (0.00091 - 0.00236 in.).
^ It is not necessary to install a spring gear when installing these part numbers on an 87MY transmission. Conversely, when installing these part numbers on an 87MY transmission, it will be necessary to transfer the spring gear to the new 1st driven gear.
^ Install the correct 1st driven gear and replace the 1st gear synchronizer according to section 3-1.
^ Replace the reverse driven gear according to section 3-1.
^ inspect the 1st - 2nd shifter fork for wear and replace if wear is evident according to section 3-1.
^ Reassemble the pinion shaft according to section 3-1.
^ Reassemble the transmission in reverse order of disassembly.

Warranty Flat Rate information can be found under Section 3 of the applicable Flat Race Manual for pinion shaft overhaul.
