Air Bag Systems: Service Precautions

The electrical circuit necessary for system deployment is powered directly from the battery and backup power supply. To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the airbag system must be deactivated prior to servicing or replacing any system components.
When checking the system, use a digital circuit tester. Use of an analog circuit tester may cause the airbag to activate accidentally.
Do not directly apply tester probe to any connector terminal of the airbag, when checking use a test harness.
Do not drop airbag modulator parts, subject modulator to high temperature (over 194°F), or apply oil, grease or water to modulator.
If any damage or open is found on SRS airbag system wire harness, do not attempt to repair harness. Replace faulty harness with new genuine part.
Before connect airbag system to ground, ensure grounding terminal is free from paint and contamination.
The airbag module must not be disassembled. When replacing the airbag module, the service technician should stand, as much as possible, on the side of the airbag. After removal, the airbag module should be kept away from heat and light sources, and stored on a clean, flat surface. Do not check airbag module continuity with airbag removed from the vehicle. When storing a removed airbag module, place it parallel with the floor with pad facing upward. Do not place module against a wall, or place anything on the pad.
