Freon Handling, R-134A Systems

R-134a is a hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant designed to protect the earth's ozone layer. However, use of an approved R-134a recovery device is required when it is necessary to discharge the A/C system for any reason. While this transparent, colorless refrigerant is not flammable or explosive, it is dangerous because its rapid evaporation rate causes it to freeze anything it contacts. For this reason, it is extremely important to wear protective goggles and clothing to prevent refrigerant from contacting skin and eyes.

If R-134a refrigerant does enter the eyes, it is best to rinse them with a few drops of sterile mineral oil and plenty of cold water. Contact a physician even if irritation ceases.

Do not expose R-134a refrigerant to temperatures above
40°C (104°F) as pressure may increase beyond system or container capacity. It is also important to keep R-134a containers upright while charging the A/C system to prevent the liquid portion of the refrigerant from entering the system.

Do not allow R-134a refrigerant to come into contact with finished or bright metal surfaces. The metal will tarnish and, if exposed to moisture, corrode.
