Engine - Head Gasket Residue Removal Procedures

Cylinder Head Gasket (residual carbon
deposits and rubber coating removal)

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide Subaru's recommended procedure of removing the residual carbon deposits and the rubber coating afier the cylinder head/gaskets are removed. If not removed properly, the new cylinder head gaskets may not seat properly when installed. Subaru does not recommend any other cleaning methods other than as outlined below. NOTE: Failure to follow the listed procedure which results in damage to the surface of the cylinder heads or block is not a matter for warranty.

REPAIR PROCEDURE/INFORMATION:





For demonstration purposes the photos are of a 2.5L SOHC engine, however the procedure applies to all engine types.














Using a gasket scraper, carefully clean any carbon deposits and rubber coating found on the surface of cylinder block and cylinder head.

CAUTION:
Keep the scraper as flush as possible to the surface to avoid damage to the mating surface of cylinder block and cylinder head.
