02 OIL CLASSIFICATION CHANGE FOR 2006MY VEHICLES2005MY Legacy and all Subaru models recommend engine oil API (American Petroleum Institute) standard SL grade Energy Conserving 5W-30, also classified by ILSAC (International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee) GF-3 and alternative API standard SJ.
2006 B9 Tribeca, Legacy, and Forester recommended materials, engine oil API standard SM Energy-Saving Type ILSAC standard GF-4 and no alternatives.

The ILSAC website has the complete explanation of the new GF-4 standards which were set on January 14, 2004. What is most important is the GF-4 ILSAC standard meets the latest U.S. Governments standards for fuel economy and long term emissions system performance and durability. It is very important that all dealers are using the correct oil in our vehicles.
