SUBJECT:
Introduction of Event Data Recorder (EDR) Function of Airbag Module

INTRODUCTION

With the release of the 2012 Impreza, new functionality has been incorporated into the airbag system This functionality takes the form of an Event Data Recorder or EDR.

The actual function of the EDR is best explained using the following statements found in the vehicle owner's manual.

This vehicle is equipped with an event data recorder (EDR) The main purpose of an EDR is to record, in certain crash or near crash-like situations such as an airbag deployment or hitting a road obstacle, data that will assist in the understanding how a vehicle's systems performed The EDR is designed to record data related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems for a short period of time, typically 30 seconds or less. The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record such data as:

^ How various systems in your vehicle were operating

^ Whether or not the driver and passenger safety belts were buckled/fastened

^ How far (if at all) the driver was depressing the accelerator and/or brake pedal

^ How fast the vehicle was traveling

These data can help provide a better understanding of the circumstances in which crashes and injuries occur.

NOTE:
EDR data are recorded by your vehicle only if a non-trivial crash situation occurs; no data are recorded by the EDR under normal driving conditions and no personal data (e.g. name gender, age, and crash location) are recorded However; other parties such as law enforcement, could combine the EDR data with the type of personally identifying data routinely acquired during a crash investigation.

To read data recorded by an EDR, special equipment is required and access to the vehicle or the EDR is needed. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer, other parties, such as law enforcement that have special equipment can read the information if they have access to the vehicle or the EDR.

REPAIR PROCEDURE/INFORMATION

CAUTION:
At no time should data in any EDR be accessed by a dealer technician without having received in advance proper legal authorization from the vehicle owner to view this data Existing laws generally provide that information recorded in an EDR is confidential and is the property of the owner of the motor vehicle Violations of those laws may result in both civil and criminal penalties.

Service information on the EDR may be found in the Airbag System (Diagnostics) section of the applicable Service Manual.

The EDR function may be accessed through the Airbag Systems portal of the Subaru Select Monitor III (SSM III) This area is found by going to the Main Menu selecting Each System Check and then Airbag System. Once there Event Record Data may be selected from the options listed Once this area is selected an Important Notice screen will appear with the following message.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Before attempting to retrieve download scan read or otherwise access information contained in an Event Data Recorder (EDR) you should make certain you are complying with all applicable federal state and/or local laws. That includes obtaining proper legal authorization prior to proceeding. Existing laws generally provide that information recorded in an EDR is confidential and is the property of the owner of the motor vehicle.

You will then be asked to check a box indicating that you are aware of and in compliance with the areas outlined in the Important Notice before the YES button will become available for you to proceed to view any data that may have been collected by the EDR.

If you have reached this area in error or have not received proper legal authorization to view any data in the EDR, simply press No to return to the Airbag System menu.

NOTE:
Any questions regarding compliance with applicable federal, state or local laws should always be directed to your dealership's legal counsel.
