Brake Interlock System





BRAKE INTERLOCK SYSTEM
This system is so designed that select lever cannot be shifted from UP" range position unless the ignition switch is turned to "ON" and brake pedal is depressed. Also, ignition key cannot be pulled out of key hole unless selector lever is in "P". These mechanism are as follows.








STEERING LOCK
When selector lever is in position other than "p", lock lever interrupts key cylinder to turn to "LOCK" position, thus steering is kept to be operated free. However, when selector lever is shifted in ups, lock lever is released, thus allowing ignition key to be removed and then steering is locked.

SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID





When the select lever is in ups range, the ignition key position is "ON" and depressing the brake pedal cause the electric current to flow to the solenoid. As the lock plate is drawn toward the solenoid in this state, it frees the detent pin, which then allows the select lever to be shifted from ups range to any other position.





Even when the select lever is in ups range, if the ignition key position is "LOCK" or "ACC" or the brake pedal is not depressed, the electric current does not flow to the solenoid.
In this state, the lock plate is pushed away from the solenoid by spring force and it obstructs the detent pin movement. Thus the select lever button does not work even when pressed and the select lever shift is prevented.





MANUAL RELEASE PROCEDURE FOR SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID
Shift lock solenoid can be manually released by following procedure.
1. Remove access hole cover by unfastening screw.
2. Turn ignition key to "ACC" position and move lock plate toward front side of vehicle by using screw driver or the like until detent pin becomes free.
3. In this state, selector lever can be moved to any range or position regardless of brake pedal operation.
