Removal and Installation

First Of Two:




REMOVAL

1. Remove the steering wheel pad by performing the following procedures.

NOTE:
^ If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.

^ Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new parts.

a. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
b. Remove the steering wheel lower No.2 and No.3 cover from the steering wheel.





c. Using a torx socket wrench, loosen the 2 torx screws taking care to loosen the 2 screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.





d. Pull out the wheel pad from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.

CAUTION:
^ When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.
^ Never disassemble the wheel pad.

NOTE:
^ When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

2. Remove the steering wheel by performing the following.
a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
c. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.





d. Using the 09950 - 50010 (09951 - 05010 09952 - 05010 09953 - 05020 09954 - 05020) SSTs, remove the steering wheel.
3. Remove the instrument lower finish panel by:
a. Disconnecting the hood lock control cable and fuel lid control cable.
b. Removing the four panel set screws.
4. Remove the no.2 heater to the register duct.
5. Remove the upper and lower column covers by removing the 5 screws.
6. Remove the combination switch with the spiral cable by performing the following.
a. Disconnect the 2 connectors.
b. Disconnect the airbag connector.
c. Remove the 4 screws.
7. Remove the spiral cable taking care to not disassemble the cable or apply oil to it.
8. Remove the four column hole cover set bolts.
9. Remove the link joint protector by removing the 2 bolts.





10. Disconnect the sliding yoke sub-assembly by performing the following.
a. Place matchmarks on the yoke sub-assembly and the worm gear valve body shaft.
b. Loosen bolt A and remove bolt B.
11. Remove the sliding yoke sub-assembly by removing the bolt A.
12. Remove the tilt steering column assembly after first disconnecting the three connectors then removing the two column assembly set nuts and two set bolts.

INSTALLATION
1. Install the steering column assembly by torqueing the 2 column assembly set nuts and 2 set bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) and then connecting the three connectors.
2. Install the sliding yoke sub-assembly by temporarily tightening the bolt A.





3. Connect the sliding yoke sub-assembly by performing the following.
a. Align the matchmarks on the yoke sub-assembly and worm gear valve body shaft.
b. Tighten bolt B to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).
c. Tighten bolt A to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the link joint protector by tightening the two bolts to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.).
5. Tighten the four column hole cover set bolts to 13 Nm (9 ft. lbs.)
6. Install the spiral cable.
7. Install the combination switch with spiral cable by first tightening the 4 screws then connecting the airbag connector and then connect the 2 connectors.
8. Install the upper and lower column covers by tightening the 5 screws.
9. Install the no.2 heater to register duct.
10. Install the instrument lower finish panel by tightening the 4 panel set screws then connecting the hood lock control cable and fuel lid control cable.





11. Insert the center spiral cable by performing the following.
a. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
b. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable, then rotate the cable clockwise about three turns to align the red mark.The cable will rotate about three turns to either left or right of the center.
12. Install the steering wheel after aligning the matchmarks on the wheel and main shaft assembly and then tightening the wheel set nut to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.). After doing that, connect the connector.
13. Install the steering wheel pad by performing the following.

NOTE:
^ Make sure the wheel pad is installed to the specified torque.
^ If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.
^ When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.

a. Connect the airbag connector.
b. Install the wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx screws is caught on the screw case.





c. Using a torx socket wrench, torque the 2 screws to 9.0 Nm (78 inch lbs.).
d. Install the steering wheel lower No.2 and No.3 cover.
14. Check the steering wheel center point.
