Removal and Installation

1. Remove battery and battery tray, Fig. 14.

2. Remove upper cooling fan shroud bolts.
3. Loosen throttle cable adjusting nut and disconnect cable from bracket.
4. Disconnect throttle cable from linkage.
5. Remove upper starter mounting bolt.
6. Remove transfer shift lever clip, washer and wave washer and disconnect transfer shift lever link.
7. Remove transfer shift lever knob.
8. Remove four center shift console screws and the console.
9. Remove transfer shift lever boot.
10. Remove console box.
11. Disconnect three console electrical connectors.
12. Remove six screws and transmission shift lever assembly.
13. Remove transfer shift lever.
14. Remove cushions.
15. Disconnect Nos. 1 and 2 vehicle speed sensor connectors.
16. Disconnect park/neutral position switch connector.
17. Disconnect solenoid connector.
18. Disconnect ATF sensor connector.
19. Disconnect center differential lock indicator switch, L4 position switch, neutral position switch connectors and bleeder hose from transfer.
20. Remove front and rear propeller shaft.
21. Remove transmission dipstick and upper side mounting bolt.
22. Remove filler pipe.
23. Loosen oil cooler pipe union nuts.
24. Remove stabilizer bar bracket mounting bolts.
25. Remove engine under cover.
26. Remove torque converter hole plug.
27. Turn crankshaft to gain access to each torque converter clutch (TCC) mounting bolt.
28. Hold crankshaft pulley nut with wrench and remove six TCC bolts.
29. Disconnect front exhaust pipe assembly.
30. Loosen front exhaust pipe clamp bolt and disconnect clamp from support bracket.
31. Remove front exhaust support bracket.
32. Remove remaining front exhaust pipe fasteners and position front exhaust assembly aside.
33. Disconnect starter electrical connector and remove starter.
34. Support transmission with suitable jack.
35. Remove crossmember from under transmission.
36. Lower rear end of transmission.
37. Separate wire harness from transmission and transfer.
38. Remove oil cooler pipe mounting bolts from torque converter clutch housing, then disconnect oil cooler pipes from elbows.
39. Remove transmission to engine mounting bolts.
40. Remove transmission.
41. Inspect torque converter and drive plate as follows:
a. Install one-way test tool No. 09350-30020, or equivalent, in inner race of one-way clutch.
b. With clutch converter on its side, turn test tool. Clutch should lock counterclockwise and rotate freely clockwise.
c. Using a suitable dial indicator, measure driveplate runout. If greater than .0079 inch or if ring gear is damaged, replace driveplate.
d. Using a suitable dial indicator, measure torque converter clutch sleeve runout. If greater than .0118 inch, reorient installation of converter clutch. If not corrected, replace torque converter clutch.
42. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten all bolts and nuts to specifications.
b. After installation, adjust shift lever and throttle cable.
