AIRBAG DEACTIVATION (SUPPLEMENT)


This Technical Service Bulletin provides you with the installation instructions for the Airbag Cut Off Switches, Off Indicator and Wiring Harnesses necessary for the Airbag Deactivation procedure adopted by Transport Canada. These instructions include the installation procedure requirements for the following conditions :

1. Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for driver side and passenger side)
2. Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for driver side only)
3. Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for passenger side only)

NOTE:
Be sure to explain the method of operation of the airbag deactivation system and also provide your customer with a copy of the owner's manual supplement.

NOTE :
Airbag Cut Off Switches are ON / OFF Switches.








PART NUMBER INFORMATION :

PREPARATION

CAUTION :
Work must be started 90 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the "LOCK" position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery. (The SRS is equipped with a back-up power source so that if work is started within 90 seconds from disconnecting the negative (-) terminal cable of the battery, the SRS may be deployed.)

HINT : For details about removal of each part, refer to the Repair Manual.

1. REMOVE COLUMN LOWER COVER
While turning the steering wheel right and left, remove the 3 screws and column lower cover.

2. REMOVE LOWER FINISH PANEL

(a) Remove the 4 bolts.
(b) Remove the hood and fuel tank release lever with 2 screws.
(c) Remove the lower finish panel.

3. REMOVE STARTER SWITCH BEZEL

4. REMOVE CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
5. REMOVE CENTRE CLUSTER FINISH PANEL


(a) Remove the A/C switch, heater control knob and heater control panel.
(b) Remove the 2 screws, then pry off the panel.
(c) Disconnect the connector then remove the panel.

6. REMOVE GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR
7. DISCONNECT FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG CONNECTOR


NOTICE : When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

8. REMOVE LOWER NO. 2 FINISH PANEL

(a) Remove the glove box lamp.
(b) Remove the 3 bolts and panel

9. REMOVE CONSOLE PANEL GARNISH
10. REMOVE UPPER CONSOLE PANEL






PROCEDURE :

1. CLUSTER FINISH PANEL

(a) Set the paper pattern for cluster finish panel on the panel back side, as shown in the illustration.





(b) Bore 2 holes at the positions marked A in the illustration.

Hole diameter : 6 mm

(c) Cut the area marked B indicated in the illustration.

NOTICE : File the edge after cutting.





2. GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR

(a) Set the paper pattern for glove compartment door, as shown in the illustration.





(b) Cut the indicated area in this illustration.

NOTICE : File the edge after cutting.





3. LOWER NO. 2 FINISH PANEL UPPER SIDE

(a) Set the paper pattern for lower No. 2 finish panel upper side, as shown in the illustration.





(b) Bore 4 holes at the positions marked A in the illustration.

Hole diameter : 6 mm

(c) Cut the area marked B in the illustration.

NOTICE : File the edge after cutting.

(d) Paste the urethane sheet on the area marked C in the illustration on the lower No. 2 finish panel.





4. LOWER NO. 2 FINISH PANEL LOWER SIDE

(a) Set the paper pattern for lower No. 2 finish panel lower side, as shown in the illustration.





(b) Bore 4 holes at the position marked.

Hole diameter : 6 mm

HINT :
Make sure to bore holes precisely so that space between each hole is identical to that on the paper pattern.





5. COLUMN LOWER COVER
Paste the urethane sheet to the column lower cover, as shown in the illustration.





6. PASTE STICKER
Paste the sticker, "SWITCH IN GLOVE BOX", on the upper surface of the airbag off indicator, as shown in the illustration.





7. WRAP AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR WIRE HARNESS WITH VINYL SHEET
Wrap the vinyl sheet around the wire harness between the end of airbag off indicator and the end of corrugated tube.

Sheet size : 50 mm x 50 mm.





ASSEMBLY :

1. INSTALL AIRBAG CUT-OFF SWITCH

(a) Cut the indicated area of switch for driver in this illustration.





(b) Install the driver's side switch and passenger's side switch to the bracket with the nuts and screws.

HINT : Install the driver's side switch to LH side and the other one to RH side.





(c) Install the switch sub-assembly to the lower No. 2 finish panel with the 4 nuts and screws.





2. INSTALL AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR

(a) Install the bracket to the indicator.
(b) Install the airbag off indicator, as shown in the illustration.

INSTALLATION :

NOTICE :
- When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness and connector.
- After binding the wire harness with a band clamp, cut off the excess.






1. TEMPORARILY INSTALL LOWER NO. 2 FINISH PANEL
Pass the wire harness of driver's side switch for the driver airbag under the heater to register duct and key cylinder to the steering column area, as shown in the illustration.





2. FIX WIRE HARNESS AROUND LOWER NO. 2 FINISH PANEL

(a) Connect 4 connectors.

(1) Connect the connector of the passenger airbag and passenger's side switch
(2) Connect the connector of the instrument panel wire harness for passenger airbag and passenger's side switch.
(3) Connect the connectors of the airbag off indicator and airbag cut-off switches.

(b) Put the connected connector on the urethane sheet.
(c) Bind the wire harness at 2 places with a band clamp.





3. FIX WIRE HARNESS AROUND STEERING COLUMN

(a) Disconnect the driver side airbag connector from the spiral cable back side.





(b) Connect one end of the wire harness of the driver's side switch to the cowl wire and the other end to the spiral cable.





(c) Bind the connector between the cowl wire and the driver's side switch at the side of the cowl wire with 2 band clamps.
(d) Bind the wire harness with a band clamp.





4. FIX WIRE HARNESS AROUND CENTER CLUSTER FINISH PANEL

(a) Pass the wire harness of the airbag off indicator to the other side under the key cylinder.





(b) After bundling the excess wire harness of the driver side switch, bind the wire harness with vinyl tape.
(c) Install the wire harness to the instrument panel, as shown in the illustration.





(d) Bind the wire harness at 2 places with band clamps, as shown in the illustration.

NOTICE :
When passing the wire harness close to the back side of the heater control, pass it through from the back side of the cowl wire harness.






5. CONNECT SUB WIRE HARNESS

(a) Connect the connector of the sub wire harness and airbag off indicator.
(b) Connect the connector of the sub wire harness and cowl wire harness.





6. INSTALL CENTER CLUSTER FINISH PANEL

(a) Connect the connector to the center cluster finish panel.
(b) Install the center cluster finish panel.

HINT: When installing the center cluster finish panel, place the sub wire harness in the area indicated in this illustration.

7. INSTALL REMOVED PARTS

HINT:
For details about installation of each part, refer to the Repair Manual.

CHECKING AFTER INSTALLATION :

1. CHECK VISIBILITY OF INDICATOR LIGHT
Check if the indicator light is visible from the normal driving position by having the customer seated in the driver's seat. Also, the indicator light must be visible from the passenger's seat.





2. SRS DIAGNOSIS CHECK

About 6 seconds after turning the ignition switch to ACC or ON, check that the SRS warning light in combination meter goes off.

If in case that the SRS warning light flashes, there may be the case of disconnection of the connector, wire break of the wire harness and short, so check the applicable circuit for DTC reading. (Refer to Repair Manual).





3. CHECK OPERATION OF AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR AND AIRBAG CUT-OFF SWITCH

(a) Turn the ignition switch, and check that all the indicator lights (AIRBAG, OFF) are lit.





(b) Check that the OFF indicator light goes out after approx. 5 seconds.

NOTICE:
In case that the airbag cut-off switch is at OFF position, the OFF indicator light stays ON.








(c) Check the operation of the OFF indicator light.





(d) Check the dimming function at night Under the condition that the ignition switch is at ACC or ON and when the airbag off indicator is lit, check that the indicator light dims when turning the light control switch to TAIL position.
