Wheel Hub: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Remove the front wheel.
2. With Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)
Disconnect the ABS speed sensor from the steering knuckle.
3. Remove the brake caliper.
a. Remove the two brake caliper set bolts.
b. Support the brake caliper securely.
4. Check the axle hub bearing backlash.
a. Remove the cap, cotter pin and lock cap.

b. Using a dial indicator near the center of the axle hub and check the backlash in the bearing shaft direction. If the backlash is not within the specification replace the bearing.
Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch).
5. Remove the axle hub with the disc.
a. Using a 30 mm socket, remove the nut.
b. Remove the axle hub with disc from the steering knuckle.

NOTICE: Be careful not to drop the outer bearing.

6. Remove the oil seal and the inner bearing.
a. Using a screwdriver, pry out the oil seal.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the ABS speed sensor rotor.

b. Remove the bearing from the hub.
7. Remove the dust cover.
Remove the three bolts and dust cover.

8. Disconnect knuckle arm from steering knuckle.
Remove the two bolts and disconnect the knuckle arm from the steering knuckle.
9. Remove the steering knuckle.
a. Support the lower suspension arm with a jack.
b. Remove the upper and lower cotter pins.
c. Remove the upper and lower nuts.

d. Using Special Service Tool (SST) 09628-62011 or equivalent, disconnect the steering knuckle from the upper and lower ball joints.
e. Remove the steering knuckle.

REPLACEMENT
1. Inspect the bearing, cleaning the bearings and the outer races and inspect them for wear or damage.
2. Replace the bearing outer race.

a. Using a brass bar and hammer, remove the bearing outer race.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the ABS speed sensor rotor.

b. Using SST 09950-60020 (09951-00710), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) or equivalents for the inside race, and SST 09950-60010 (09951-00480), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) or equivalents for the outside race, and a press, carefully install a new bearing outer race.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the ABS speed sensor rotor.

INSPECTION
Using a dye penetrant, check the steering knuckle for cracks.

INSTALLATION
1. Install the steering knuckle.
a. Support the lower suspension arm with a jack.
b. Install the steering knuckle to the upper ball joint and nut.

c. Push down the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle and install the steering knuckle to the lower ball joint and nut.
d. Tighten the upper ball joint nut.
Torque: 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.).
e. Tighten the lower ball joint nut.
Torque: 142 Nm (105 ft. lbs.).
f. Install the two new cotter pins.
2. Connect the knuckle arm end to the steering knuckle.
a. Clean the threads of the bolts and steering knuckle with toluene or trichloroethylene.

b. Apply sealant to the bolt threads.
Sealant: THREE BOND 1324 or equivalent
c. Tighten the two bolts.
Torque: 183 Nm (135 ft. lbs.).
3. Install dust cover.
Install the three bolts and tighten them.
Torque: 19 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).
4. Pack the bearings with Multipurpose (MP) grease.
a. Place the MP grease in the palm of your hand.

b. Pack the grease into the bearing, continuing until the grease oozes out from the other side.
c. Do the same around the bearing circumference.
5. Coat inside of the hub and cap with MP grease.
6. Install the inner bearing and the oil seal.
a. Place bearing into the hub.

b. Using Special Service Tool (SST) 09950-60020 (09951-00710), 09950-70010 (09951-00150) or equivalents, and a hammer, install the oil seal into the hub.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor rotor.

c. Coat the oil seal lip with MP grease.
7. Install the axle hub with the disc.
a. Place the axle hub on the spindle.
b. Install the bearing and thrust washer.
8. Adjust the preload.

a. Install and torque the nut.
Torque: 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
b. Snug down the bearing by turning the hub several times.
c. Loosen the nut until it can be turned by hand.

d. Using a spring tension gauge, measure and make a note of the frictional force of the oil seal.
Preload (at starting): 4.0 N (0.9 lbs.) or less.

HINT: Make sure to check preload in the direction of rotation.

e. Tighten the nut until the preload is within the specification.
Preload (at starting): 5.0 - 14.0 N (1.1 - 3.1 lbs.).

HINT: Make sure to check preload in the direction rotation.

f. Using a dial indicator, measure the hub bearing backlash.
Backlash: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch).
9. Install the lock cap, cotter pin and the grease cap.
