Exhaust Gas Recirculation: Testing and Inspection

1985 2L ENGINE

1. Connect vacuum gauge in line between EGR valve and VCV using a suitable fitting.
2. Start engine and ensure engine operates properly at idle. If engine operates rough or stalls, check for improperly seated EGR valve.
3. With coolant temperature below 98°F, run engine at 2000 RPM and observe vacuum gauge. If gauge reading is not zero, BVSV is defective.
4. Warm engine to normal operating temperature and ensure gauge indicates zero vacuum at idle.
5. Gradually increase engine speed to 2300 RPM and ensure gauge indicates above 11.02 inches Hg.
6. Gradually increase engine speed to 4800 RPM. Vacuum gauge reading should slowly decrease to approximately 7.87 inches Hg, then quickly drop to zero.
7. If system does not operate as specified, test system components individually until fault is found.
