Fuel Pump: Testing and Inspection
1. CHECK FUEL PUMP OPERATION.
a. Turn the ignition switch to "ON".
NOTE: Do not start the engine.
b. Short terminals Fp and + B of the check connector with the service wire.
NOTE: The check connector is located near the No.2 relay block.
c. Check that there is pressure in the fuel inlet hose.
NOTE: At this time, you will hear fuel pressure noise.
d. Remove the service wire.
e. Turn the ignition switch to "OFF".
If there is no pressure, check the following parts.
- Fusible Link.
- Fuse.
- Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) Main Relay.
- Circuit Opening Relay.
- Fuel Pump.
- Fuel Pump Relay.
- Fuel Pump Resistor.
- Wiring Connections.
f. Check that battery voltage is above 11 volts.
g. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. REMOVE COLD START INJECTOR TUBE
(7M-GE)
7M-GE:
a. Disconnect the wiring connector from the cold start injector.
b. Place a suitable container or shop towel under the cold start injector tube.
c. Slowly loosen the union bolt of the cold start injector tube and remove the bolt and two gaskets from the delivery pipe.
(7M-GTE)
a. Place a suitable container or shop towel under the cold start injector.
7M-GTE:
b. Slowly loosen the union bolt the cold start injector tube and remove the bolt and two gaskets from the cold Start injector.
c. Remove the union bolt, fuel tube and gaskets.
d. Remove the two bolts.
e. Remove the cold start injector from the intake chamber.
f. Install the cold start injector with the two bolts.
3. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE.
a. Install a gasket, SST, another gasket and union bolt to the delivery pipe as shown in the figure.
*SST 09268-45011
b. Wipe off any splattered gasoline.
c. Reconnect the battery negative cable.
d. Short terminals Fp and +B of the check connector with the service wire.
e. Turn the ignition switch to "ON'.
f. Measure the fuel pressure.
Fuel pressure:
2.3 - 2.8 kg/cm2 (33 - 40 psi, 226 - 275 kPa)
If high, replace the pressure regulator.
If low, check the following parts.
- Fuel hoses and connection.
- Fuel pump.
- Fuel filter.
- Pressure regulator.
g. Remove the service wire from the check connector.
h. Start the engine.
i. Disconnect the vacuum sensing hose from the pressure regulator and pinch it closed.
j. Measure the fuel pressure at idling.
Fuel pressure:
2.3 - 2.8 kg/cm2 (33 - 40 psi. 226 - 275 kPa)
k. Reconnect the vacuum sensing hose to the pressure regulator.
l. Measure the fuel pressure at idling.
Fuel pressure:
1.6 - 2.1 kg/cm2 (23 - 30 psi, 157 - 206 kPa)
If no pressure, check the vacuum sensing hose and pressure regulator.
m. Stop the engine. Check that the fuel pressure remains above 1.5 kg/cm2 (21 psi, 147 kPa) for 5 minutes after the engine is turned "OFF".
If not within specification, check the fuel pump, pressure regulator and/or injectors.
n. After checking fuel pressure, disconnect the battery negative cable and carefully remove the SST to prevent gasoline from splashing.
4. INSTALL COLD START INJECTOR PIPE.
(7M-GE)
a. Using new gaskets, reconnect the cold start injector~ hose to the delivery pipe.
b. Connect the wiring connector to the cold start injector.
c. Check for fuel leakage.
(7M-GTE)
a. Remove the two bolts and cold start injector.
b. Connect the connector.
c. Using a new gasket, install the cold start injector with the two bolts.
d. Using new gaskets, install the fuel tube to the cold start injector and delivery pipe.
e. Check for fuel leakage.
