Installation
1. MEASURE DRIVE PLATE RUNOUT AND INSPECT RING GEAR
Set up a dial indicator and measure the drive plate runout. If runout exceeds 0.20 mm (0.0079 in.) or if the ring gear is damaged, replace the drive plate. If installing a new drive plate, note the orientation of spacers and tighten the bolts.
Torque: 750 kg.cm (54 ft.lb, 74 N.m)
2. MEASURE TORQUE CONVERTER SLEEVE RUNOUT
a. Temporarily mount the torque converter to the drive plate. Set up a dial indicator.
If runout exceeds 0.30 mm (0.0118 in.), try to correct by reorienting the installation of the converter. If excessive runout cannot be corrected, replace the torque converter.
NOTE: Mark the position of the converter to ensure correct installation.
b. Remove the torque converter.
3. INSTALL ENGINE REAR MOUNT INSULATOR TO EXTENSION HOUSING
a. Inspect the insulator for deterioration and replace if necessary.
b. Install the engine rear mount insulator together ground cable.
4. INSTALL FILLER TUBE
Replace a new O-ring and push the tube into place.
5. APPLY GREASE TO CENTER HUB OF TORQUE CONVERTER AND PILOT HOLE IN CRANKSHAFT
6. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER IN TRANSMISSION
7. CHECK TORQUE CONVERTER INSTALLATION
Using calipers and a straight edge, measure from the installed surface to the front surface of the transmission housing.
Correct distance: 26.4 mm (1.04 in.)
8. ALIGN TRANSMISSION AT INSTALLATION POSITION
a. Align the two knock pins on the block with the converter housing.
b. Temporarily install one bolt.
9. INSTALL TRANSMISSION HOUSING MOUNTING BOLTS
a. Install the four transmission housing mounting bolts.
Torque: 650 kg.cm (47 ft.lb, w64 N.m)
b. Install the starter.
10. INSTALL THE SIX TORQUE CONVERTER BOLTS
a. Install the six bolts finger tight. Turn the crankshaft to gain access.
b. Tighten the bolts evenly.
Torque: 420 kg.cm (30 ft.lb, 41 N.m)
11. INSTALL REAR SUPPORT MEMBER ON BODY
a. Install the two bolts at each end of the support.
b. Connect the ground strap.
12. LOWER TRANSMISSION, AND INSTALL FOUR REMAINING MOUNTING BOLTS
13. INSTALL CONVERTER COVER, EXHAUST PIPE CLAMP AND BOTH STIFFENER PLATES
14. CONNECT SPEEDOMETER CABLE
Be sure the felt dust protector and washer are on the end of the cable. Tighten the collar with pliers.
15. CONNECT MANUAL SHIFT LINKAGE
16. CONNECT OIL COOLER PIPES
Torque: 350 kg.cm (25 ft.lb, 34 N.m)
17. INSTALL OIL COOLER PIPE CLAMP TO TRANSMISSION CASE
18. INSTALL EXHAUST FRONT PIPE
a. Connect the pipe to the exhaust manifold.
b. Install the pipe clamp.
c. Install the two rubber hangers.
d. Connect the pipe to the tail pipe.
19. INSTALL PROPELLER SHAFT TOGETHER CENTER BEARING
Torque:
Center bearing 375 kg.cm (27 ft.lb, 37 N.m)
Propeller shaft 750 kg.cm (54 ft.lb, 74 N.m)
20. CONNECT THE FOUR WIRING CONNECTORS
21. CONNECT TRANSMISSION THROTTLE CABLE
a. Connect the cable to the throttle linkage.
b. Connect the cable housing to the bracket.
c. Clamp the throttle cable to the engine rear end.
22. ADJUST TRANSMISSION THROTTLE CABLE
23. CONNECT BATTERY CABLE TO NEGATIVE (-) TERMINAL
24. FILL TRANSMISSION WITH ATF
Fluid type: ATF DEXRON(R) II
Capacity: 7.2 liters (7.6 US qts, 6.3 Imp.qts)
25. CHECK FLUID LEVEL
26. PERFORM ROAD TEST
Check for abnormal noise, shock, slippage, correct shift points and smooth operation.
