M/T - Clutch Vibration/Judder Elimination
AIL: TRANSMISSION & CLUTCHNO.: TC94-001 (REVISED)
DATE: JULY 15, 1994
MODEL: RN
CLUTCH JUDDER
The Information contained in this TSB supercedes TC94-001 dated February 18, 1994. The previous TSB should be discarded.
The clutch disc and clutch cover have been modified to reduce clutch judder on RN 4x2 and 4x4 models.
Use the following steps to confirm a customer complaint:
1. Test drive vehicle to verify condition.
2. Inspect clutch assembly using the inspection procedure.
3. Refer to application chart for replacement parts.
NOTE:
4x4 models produced after 8/93 P/D will have a larger clutch cover & clutch disc, (size increased from 9.0" to 9.5").
CLUTCH INSPECTION PROCEDURE:
1. Remove clutch cover and disc.
2. Using a dial indicator, check flywheel for face runout (See Figure 2).
Maximum runout: 0.1 mm (0.004 in.)
a. If flywheel is greater than 0.1 mm (0.004 in.) then phase match flywheel for minimum run-out.
1. Mark highest runout on flywheel.
2. Remove flywheel
3. Mark lowest runout on crank flange.
4. Match high end of flywheel to low end of crank flange.
5. Re-check flywheel runout.
b. If runout is not within specification after phase matching, resurface flywheel.
c. If runout is not within specification after resurfacing, replace flywheel.
3. Inspect replacement disc runout (See figure 3).
Maximum runout: 0.8 mm (0.031 in.).
The above inspection procedures are critical to ensure a proper repair.
CLUTCH INSTALLATION PROCEDURE:
1. Install clutch cover
a. Align the match marks on the clutch cover and flywheel.
b. Torque bolts in a star pattern as shown in Figure 4.
Torque: 19 N-m (195 kgf-cm, 14 ft.lb.).
2. Check diaphragm spring tip alignment. Maximum non-alignment 0.5 (0.020 in.).
PRODUCTION EFFECTIVE:
- Final countermeasures for both 4x2 & 4x4 Implemented during 10/93 production on TMC vehicles and 11/93 on NUMMI built vehicles.
