Check Engine Lamp
The check engine lamp will be illuminated when the ignition switch is in the On position with engine not operating. When engine is started, the Check Engine lamp should go off. If lamp remains on, a code has been stored by the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) memory. After diagnosis and repair, place ignition switch in Off position, then clear codes stored in ECU memory by removing the fuse described below. On models with carbureted engine, remove the Haz-Horn fuse which is located in relay panel located in the engine compartment, on the righthand side of vehicle. On models with Fuel Injected engine, remove EFI fuse (15A) from fuse panel located in the passenger compartment, on the driver's side behind the kick panel. The fuse must be removed for 30 seconds or longer, depending on ambient temperature. The lower the ambient temperature, the longer the fuse will have to be removed. Another method to erase stored codes is to disconnect the battery negative cable. This method will also erase any other stored memories, such as the clock and radio.
