Disassembly and Reassembly
DISASSEMBLY:Distributor, Exploded View:
1. Remove distributor from vehicle. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION.
2. Remove distributor cap, packing and distributor rotor.
Ignition Coil Removal:
3. Remove the ignition coil retaining nuts. Disconnect the ignition coil terminals, remove ignition coil from distributor.
4. Remove the distributor wire with the condenser.
Igniter Removal:
5. Remove igniter retaining screws, remove igniter from distributor.
Vacuum Advance Removal:
6. Remove the vacuum advance retaining screw. Disconnect the advance linkage from the breaker plate and remove the advance unit.
Signal Rotor Removal:
7. Using a screwdriver, pry out the signal rotor and the spring.
Breaker Plate And Pickup Coil Removal:
8. Remove the two screws and washers, retaining the breaker plate. Remove the breaker plate and signal generator (pickup coil).
Rotor Shaft Removal:
9. Remove the grease stopper from top of shaft.
10. Remove the screw at the end of the governor shaft and remove the rotor shaft.
Governor Weight Removal:
11. Using a small screwdriver, remove the E clips and remove the weights from the distributor housing.
Pick-up Coil:
12. Inspect the breaker plate by turning the plate. Ensure there is a slight drag against the pickup coil. If the resistance is strong or sticky, replace the breaker plate and pickup coil assembly.
Breaker Plate Inspection:
13. Inspect the governor shaft bearing by rotating the shaft and ensure that the bearing is not rough or worn. If the bearing is damaged replace the distributor housing.
Rotor Shaft Inspection:
14. Temporarily install the rotor shaft to the governor shaft. Ensure the shafts fit correctly. If the shafts do not fit correctly, replace the rotor shaft or the distributor housing as necessary.
REASSEMBLY:
E Clip Installation:
1. Install governor weights. Using a pair of needle nose pliers, install the E clips.
Rotor Shaft Installation:
2. Install rotor shaft on governor shaft.
Grease Stopper Installation:
3. Install the screw holding the two shafts together. Pack high temperature grease into the shaft and install the grease stopper.
Centrifugal Advance:
4. Using a pair of needle nose pliers install governor springs.
Breaker Plate And Pickup Coil Removal:
5. Align the cutout parts of the breaker plate and housing. Install the breaker plate and pickup coil. Tighten the breaker plate retaining screws and washers.
Signal Rotor Installation:
6. Push the signal rotor and a new spring into place.
Rotor Air Gap:
7. Using a non magnetic feeler gauge, check the gap between the signal rotor and signal generator (pickup coil).
Air Gap: 0.008 - 0.016 in (.2 - .4 mm)
8. If rotor air gap is not within specifications, replace breaker plate and pickup coil assembly.
a. Remove signal rotor.
b. Remove the breaker plate and pickup coil assembly.
c. Clean the pickup set screws and screw holes of any oil or foreign particles.
Set Screw Sealing:
d. Apply sealant to the last 3 - 5 mm of the screw end.
Set Screw Installation:
e. Using a torx driver, install the set screws and adjust the rotor air gap.
NOTE: Do not run engine for at least 30 minutes after breaker plate and pickup coil assembly installation. Don't run engine at high speed for at least 120 minutes.
Vacuum Advance Installation:
9. Connect the advance linkage to the breaker plate and install the vacuum advance screw.
Igniter Connections:
10. Install the igniter unit. Connect the orange wire to the positive terminal and the white wire to the negative terminal.
Primary Ignition Wire Routing:
11. Secure the pickup coil wires in the wire retaining clips.
Distributor Wire Installation:
12. Install the distributor wire grommet into the distributor housing.
13. Install ignition coil. Refer to IGNITION COIL.
14. Install distributor rotor, dust cover, and distributor cap.
15. Install distributor in vehicle. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION.
16. Adjust ignition timing. Refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES.
