Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

PROCEDURE

Removal


1. Disconnect negative terminal cable from battery.
2. Disconnect heated oxygen sensor connecters.
3. Remove front exhaust pipe assembly.





- Remove the 4 bolts, 2 nuts and retainer holding the front No.3 front exhaust pipe to the converters.





- Loosen the clamp bolt and disconnect the clamp from the No.1 support bracket.
- Remove the 2 bolts and No.1 support bracket.
- Remove the 4 nuts, front exhaust pipe assembly and 4 gaskets.





4. Remove converters.





- Remove the 4 bolts, nuts, 2 front exhaust pipes and gaskets.
- Remove the 4 nuts, 2 insulator covers and TWCs.

Installation

1. Reinstall converters.





- Place TWCs on the upper converter insulator cover, with the front mark of the TWC facing forward.





- Install the lower converter insulator cover with the 4 nuts.

Torque: 11 Nm (8 ft lb)





- Install 2 new gaskets and the front exhaust pipes with the 4 bolts and nuts.

Torque: 39 Nm (29 ft lb)

2. Reinstall front exhaust pipe assembly.





- Install 2 new gaskets and the front exhaust pipe assembly with the 4 nuts.

Torque: 62 Nm (46 ft lb)

- Install the No.1 support bracket with the 2 bolts.

Torque: 24 Nm (17 ft lb)

- Connect the clamp and tighten the clamp bolt.

Torque: 19 Nm (14 ft lb)





- Connect 2 new gaskets and the front exhaust pipe assembly to the No.3 front exhaust pipe with the 4 bolts, 2 nuts and retainer.

Torque: 39 Nm (29 ft lb)

3. Reconnect heated oxygen sensor connector.
4. Reconnect negative terminal cable to battery.
