Air Flow Meter/Sensor: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
The Volume Air Flow Meter (VAF) measures intake air volume and converts these readings into voltage signals. These signals are supplied to the Engine Control Module (ECM) and are used to correctly determine air/fuel mixture.
OPERATION
The Volume Air Flow Meter measures intake air volume by means of a variable resistor (potentiometer) connected to a measuring plate which moves in relation to air flow. These voltage signals are then sent to the ECM and used to determine injection duration and proper fuel delivery. When intake air volume is low, the voltage is high; when the intake air volume is high, the voltage signal is approximately zero.
