Wheel Hub: Testing and Inspection


Rear Axle Shaft:





INSPECTION
1. If the vehicle came w/ ABS, remove the bearing retainer (differential side) and the ABS speed sensor rotor by performing the following.





a. Attach four nuts to the serration bolts and remove the serration bolts from the backing plate using a hammer.

NOTE: Do not reuse the nuts previously removed from the vehicle.





b. Grind the retainer and sensor rotor surfaces using a grinder, then chisel them out with a chisel.
c. Attach washers and nuts to the four serration bolts, then torque the nuts to install the serration bolts to the backing plate.
d. Remove the four nuts from the serration bolts.

2. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring from the axle shaft.
3. Remove the rear axle shaft from the backing plate, doing the following.





a. Position the 09521-25011 Special Service Tool (SST) on the backing plate with the four nuts.





b. Using a press, remove the rear axle shaft with the bearing retainer from the backing plate.
c. Remove the SST.






4. Inspect the axle shaft, the maximum runouts are as follows.
^ Shaft Runout: 2.0 mm (0.079 inch).
^ Flange Runout: 0.1 mm (0.004 inch).

NOTE: If the rear axle shaft or flange are damaged or worn, or if runout is greater than the maximum, replace the rear axle shaft.





5. Using the 09308 00010 SST, remove the outer oil seal.


6. Replace the rear axle bearing by performing these steps.





a. Using the 09223 - 56010, 09950 60010 (09951 - 00560) SST and a press, remove the bearing.





b. Using the 09515-30010, 09950 - 60020 (09951 - 00890) SST and a press, install a new bearing.





7. Using the 09950-60010 (09951-00610), 0995-70010 (09951-7150) SST and a hammer, install a new outer oil seal.
8. Replace the bearing case by performing the following.
a. Remove the oil seal (outer side) and bearing.
b. Install four nuts to the serration bolts.
c. Using a hammer, remove the four serration bolts and remove the bearing case.





d. Position the backing plate on a new bearing case and, using two socket wrenches and a install the four serration bolts.
e. Install a new bearing and (outer side) oil seal.

9. Replace the (inner side) oil seal by doing these steps.





a. Using the 09308-0010 SST, remove the oil seal.





b. Using the 09950-60020 (09951-00710), 09950-70010 (09951 -07150) SST and a hammer, install a new oil seal.
c. Apply MP grease to the oil seal lip.

10. Install the rear axle shaft in the backing plate by performing the following.
a. Apply IMP grease to the oil seal lip.
b. Install the backing plate and bearing retainer on the rear axle shaft.





c. Using the 09316 60010 (0931-00050) SST and a press, install the rear axle shaft into the backing plate.
d. Using snap ring pliers, install a new snap ring.





11. If the vehicle came w/ ABS, using the 09316 60010 (0931-00050) SST and a press, install a new ABS speed sensor rotor and new (differential side) bearing retainer to the axle shaft. The standard length is 122.2 + 1.0 mm (4.811-0.039 inch).
