Inspection and Repair


INSPECTION

NOTE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.





1. Inspect the steering lock operation by checking to see if the steering lock mechanism operates properly.
2. If necessary, replace the key cylinder, doing the following.
a. Place the ignition key at the ACC position.





b. Using a screwdriver, push down the stop pin of the cylinder, and pull out the key cylinder.
c. Install a new cylinder.

NOTE: Make sure the key is at the ACC position.

3. Inspect the ignition switch.
4. If necessary, replace the ignition switch, doing the following.
a. Remove the two screws.
b. Install a new switch with the two screws.

5. Inspect the key unlock warning switch.
6. If the vehicle came with a manual transmission, replace the key unlock warning switch doing the following.
a. Remove the two screws.
b. Install a new switch with the two screws.

7. If the vehicle came with an automatic transmission, inspect the key interlock solenoid
8. If the vehicle came with an automatic transmission, replace the key unlock warning switch with the key interlock solenoid, doing the following.
a. Remove the four screws.
b. Install a new switch and solenoid with the four screws.

9. If necessary, replace the bushing by performing the following.





a. Using a screwdriver, loosen the three projections of the bushing, and remove the bushing from the column tube.
b. Coat the inside of a new bushing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease.





c. Align the projections on the bushing with the holes in the column tube, then install the bushing until the projections are firmly engaged in the holes.

10. Inspect the bearing, doing these steps.





a. Check the bearing rotation condition and check for abnormal noise. If the bearing is worn or damaged, replace the column tube/column upper tube.
b. Coat the bearing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease.

11. For the tilt steering column, inspect the bearing by doing the following.





a. Check the bearing rotation condition of the main shaft assembly and check for abnormal noise. If necessary, replace bearing.
b. Coat the bearing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease.
