Bleeding the Brake System

BRAKE SYSTEM BLEEDING

- IF ANY WORK IS DONE ON THE BRAKE SYSTEM OR AIR IN THE BRAKE LINES IS SUSPECTED, BLEED THE SYSTEM OF AIR.

NOTICE: Do not let brake fluid remain on a painted surface. Wash it off immediately.

1. Fill brake reservoir with brake fluid.
Fluid: SAEJ1703 or FMVSS No.116 DOT 3

2. Bleed master cylinder.
HINT: If the master cylinder has been disassembled or the reservoir becomes empty, bleed the master cylinder.
a. Disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder.
b. Slowly depress the brake pedal and hold it.

c. Block off the outlet plug with your finger and release the brake pedal.
d. Repeat b. and c. 3 or 4 times.

3. Bleed brake line.
a. Connect the vinyl tube to the caliper or wheel cylinder.
b. Depress the brake pedal several times, then loosen the bleeder plug with the pedal held down.
c. At the point when fluid stops coming out, tighten the bleeder plug, then release the brake pedal.
d. Repeat b. and c. until all the air in the fluid has been bled out.
e. Repeat the above procedure to bleed the brake line for each wheel.

4. With ABS: Bleed ABS actuator if equipped.
Using Special Service Tool (SST) 09843-18020 or equivalent, connect terminals Tc, Ts and E1 of DLC1.
b. Turn the ignition switch ON.
c. Check the air bleed mode display by blinking of ABS warning light on the combination meter.

HINT: ABS warning light blinks every 1.5 secs. as shown in the illustration to show that ABS ECU is in the air bleed mode.

d. Depress the brake pedal and hold it.
HINT: Do not depress the brake pedal at this moment.

f. Do not depress the brake pedal several times.
e. 1 second after depressing the brake pedal, check that the pressure reduction solenoid operates for 0.5 sec. and the pedal reaches the end.

HINT: Continue to depress the brake pedal until pedal end.

f. Release the brake pedal.
g. After 0.5 sec., check that the motor operates for 1.5 sec.
HINT: Do not depress the brake pedal at this moment.

h. Check the air bleed mode display with blinking pattern of ABS warning light on the combination meter.
1. If the display is OK as shown in the illustration, go to step i.
2. If the display is NG as shown in the illustration, turn the ignition switch OFF then repeat the operation from step 4-b again.

CAUTION: Do not finish bleeding the ABS actuator with the operation still abnormal.

i. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
j. Repeat step 3- b.to e.
k. Repeat step 4- b. to j. several times.
HINT: Repeat the above procedure to bleed the air cut of the brake line for each wheel.
l. Disconnect terminals Tc, Ts and E1 of DLC1

5. Check fluid level in reservoir.
Check the fluid level and add fluid if necessary.
Fluid: SAEJ1703 or FMVSS No.116 DOT 3
