Disassembly and Assembly
DISASSEMBLY
NOTICE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
1. w/o Engine immobilizer system: REMOVE KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSEMBLY
Remove the screw and key cylinder lamp assembly.
2. w/ Engine immobilizer system: REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY COIL AND KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSEMBLY
Remove the screw, transponder key coil and key cylinder lamp assembly.
3. REMOVE UNIVERSAL JOINT ASSEMBLY
a. Place matchmarks on the universal joint assembly and main shaft assembly.
b. Remove the bolt and universal joint assembly.
4. Column shift: REMOVE SHIFT LOCK CONTROL ECU
Disconnect the 3 connectors and remove the shift lock control ECU.
5. REMOVE COLUMN UPPER BRACKET AND COLUMN UPPER CLAMP
a. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
b. Using a 3 - 4 mm (0.12 - 0.16 inch) drill, drill into the 2 bolts.
c. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts, column upper bracket and column upper clamp.
6. Column shift: REMOVE SHIFT LEVER HOUSING
a. Remove the torx screw and shift lock switch.
b. Remove the 2 torx screws and shift lock solenoid bracket.
c. Remove the torx screw and shift lever.
d. Remove the 3 torx screws and shift lever housing.
7. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL BRACKET
a. Remove the tension spring.
b. Remove the 2 torx screws and turn signal bracket.
8. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN HOUSING WITH MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Set Special Service Tool (SST), plate washer (18 and 36 mm outer diameter) and screw (4.0 mm diameter, 0.7 mm pitch, 15.0 mm length), as shown in the illustration. And then remove the 2 pivot pins.

b. Remove the column housing with the main shaft assembly from the column tube assembly.
NOTICE: Do not bend the universal joint of the main shaft assembly more than 20°.
c. Remove tilt spring and spring guide.
9. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN HOUSING SUPPORT
a. Remove the 4 torx bolts.
b. Remove the 2 tilt No.1 stoppers and steering column housing support.
10. REMOVE LOWER BEARING ADAPTOR AND LOWER SHAFT BUSHING
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the lower bearing adapter with lower shaft bushing from the column tube assembly.
b. Remove the lower shaft bushing from the lower bearing adapter.
11. REMOVE MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Install SST to the main shaft assembly, as shown in the illustration.

b. Using SST, compress the compression spring.
NOTICE: Do not bend the universal joint of the main shaft assembly more than 20°.
HINT: Hold the main shaft assembly with your hand so that it does not rotate.
c. Using a screwdriver, remove the retaining ring.
d. Remove the spring retainer, compression spring, main shaft bushing and main shaft collar.
12. REMOVE TILT LEVER
Remove the tilt lever lock shaft and tilt lever.
INSPECTION:
1. INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION
Check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly.
2. IF NECESSARY, REPLACE KEY CYLINDER
a. Place the ignition key at the ACC position.
b. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the key cylinder.
c. Install a new key cylinder.
HINT: Make sure the ignition key is at the ACC position.
3. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH
4. INSPECT KEY UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH
5. IF NECESSARY, REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH WITH KEY UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH
a. Remove the 2 screws and slide the ignition switch with key unlock warning switch out of the column upper bracket.
b. Slide a new ignition switch with key unlock warning switch in the column upper bracket and install the 2 screws.
6. Column shift: INSPECT SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID, SHIFT LOCK SWITCH AND SHIFT LOCK CONTROL ECU
7. Column shift: IF NECESSARY, REPLACE SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID, SHIFT LOCK SWITCH AND SHIFT LOCK CONTROL ECU
8. w/ Engine immobilizer system: INSPECT TRANSPONDER KEY COIL
9. w/ Engine immobilizer system: IF NECESSARY, REPLACE TRANSPONDER KEY COIL
10. w/ Engine immobilizer system: IF NECESSARY, REPLACE TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER
a. Remove the 2 screws and transponder key amplifier.
b. Install a new transponder key amplifier with the 2 screws.
11. INSPECT KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
12. IF NECESSARY, REPLACE KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
a. Remove the 2 screws and key interlock solenoid.
b. Install a new key interlock solenoid with the 2 screws.
13. INSPECT BEARING
Check the bearing rotation condition and check for abnormal noise.
If faulty, replace the column housing.
REASSEMBLY
NOTICE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
1. COAT PARTS INDICATED BY ARROWS WITH MOLYBDENUM DISULFIDE LITHIUM BASE GREASE
2. INSTALL TILT LEVER
Install the tilt lever with a new tilt lever lock shaft.
Torque: 9.0 Nm (90 kgf-cm, 78 inch lbs.)
3. INSTALL MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Install the main shaft collar, main shaft bushing, compression spring and spring retainer.
b. Install a new retaining ring to the main shaft assembly.
c. Install the washer of Special Service Tool (SST) to the main shaft assembly.
d. Install (SST) to the main shaft assembly, as shown in the illustration.

e. Using SST, push down the retaining ring until it fits into the shaft groove and install the main shaft assembly.
NOTICE: Do not bend the universal joint of the shaft assembly more than 20°.
HINT: Hold the main shaft assembly with your hand so that it does not rotate.
4. INSTALL LOWER BEARING ADAPTER AND LOWER SHAFT BUSHING
a. Install the lower shaft bushing to the lower bearing adapter.
b. Align a ditch of the column tube assembly and projection of the lower bearing adapter, and install the lower bearing adapter in the tube assembly.
5. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN HOUSING SUPPORT
a. Install the steering column housing support with 2 new tilt No.1 stopper.
b. Install 4 new torx bolts.
Torque: 19 Nm (195 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.)
6. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN HOUSING WITH MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a. Install the steering column housing with the main shaft assembly into the column tube assembly.
b. Install the tilt spring and spring guide.
c. Using a vise to hold the steering column housing and steering column housing support.
d. Temporarily install 2 new pivot pins.
e. Using a punch and a hammer, tap in the pivot pin.
f. Using a pin punch, stake on 3 places evenly around the hole as shown in the illustration.
7. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL BRACKET
a. Install the turn signal bracket with 2 new torx screws.
Torque: 7.5 Nm (75 kgf-cm, 65 inch lbs.)
HINT: Set the hole of the turn signal bracket and projection of steering column housing.
b. Install the tension spring.
8. Column shift: INSTALL SHIFT LEVER HOUSING
a. Install the shift lever housing with 3 new torx screws.
Torque: 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)
b. Install the shift lever with a new torx screw.
Torque: 11 Nm (110 kgf-cm, 8 ft. lbs.)
c. Install the shift lock solenoid bracket with 2 new torx screws.
Torque: 3.4 Nm (35 kgf-cm, 30 inch lbs.)
d. Install the shift lock switch with a new torx screw.
Torque: 2.8 Nm (29 kgf-cm, 25 inch lbs.)
9. INSTALL COLUMN UPPER BRACKET AND COLUMN UPPER CLAMP
a. Install the column upper bracket and column upper clamp with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
HINT: Insert the bracket pin into the column tube hole.
b. Tighten the tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.
10. Column shift: INSTALL SHIFT LOCK CONTROL ECU
Install the shift lock control ECU and connect the 3 connectors.
11. INSTALL UNIVERSAL JOINT ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the universal joint assembly and main shaft assembly.
b. Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)
12. w/o Engine immobilizer system: INSTALL KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSEMBLY
Install the key cylinder lamp assembly with screw.
13. w/ Engine immobilizer system: INSTALL KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSEMBLY AND TRANSPONDER KEY COIL
Install the key cylinder lamp assembly and transponder key coil with screw.
