TORQUE CONVERTER SET BOLTS

When installing an automatic transmission assembly after repair or replacement, it is critical that the correct torque converter set bolts are used. (Refer to applicable parts micro-fiche or the attached part number information for application and part numbers).

The use of a longer torque converter set bolt than specified causes a projection on the front cover of the torque converter. This projection can internally damage the torque converter lock-up clutch disc. Material from the lock-up clutch may contaminate the transmission and valve body requiring additional repairs. When this damage occurs, it cannot be seen or detected by the Technician after assembled.

When the torque converter is temporarily installed to the flex plate using bolts other than the specified set bolts, these bolts must be tightened by hand to prevent this damage.

NOTE:
One of the Torque converter set bolts is a different colour than the other five. This one must be installed first and hand tightened only. This is to center the flex plate onto the torque converter. Install and hand tighten the other five set bolts. Torque all the set bolts to factory specification in three steps and in a cross pattern (see illustration). Refer to applicable repair manual for all torque values.
