AIRBAG DEACTIVATION (SUPPLEMENT)


This Technical Service Bulletin provides you with the installation instructions for the Airbag Cut Off Switches, Off Indicator and Wiring Harnesses necessary for the Airbag Deactivation procedure adopted by Transport Canada. These instructions include the installation procedure requirements for the following conditions :

1. Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for driver side and passenger side)
2. Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for driver side only)
3. Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for passenger side only)

NOTE:
Be sure to explain the method of operation of the airbag deactivation system and also provide your customer with a copy of the owner's manual supplement.





INSTALLATION TIME : (Hours).

PRODUCTION EFFECTIVE : 1999 Model Year.

NOTE:
Airbag Cut-Off Switches are ON / OFF Switches.

PREPARATION

CAUTION:
Work must be started more than 90 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the "LOCK" position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery. (The SRS is equipped with a back-up power source. If work is started within 90 seconds from disconnecting the negative (-) terminal cable of the battery, the SRS may deployed.)

HINT
For details about removal of each part, refer to the Repair Manual.

1. REMOVE COLUMN LOWER COVER

While turning the steering wheel right / left, remove the 3 screws and column lower cover.

2. REMOVE LOWER FINISH PANEL

(a) Remove the front door scuff plate LH.
(b) Remove the cowl side trim LH.
(c) Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the hood lock release lever.
(d) Remove the lower finish panel.

3. REMOVE LOWER LH INSERT
Remove the 2 bolts and lower LH insert.

4. REMOVE CLUSTER FINISH PANEL

a) Remove the 2 screws.
b) Using a screwdriver, remove the panel.

HINT : Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

5. REMOVE COMBINATION METER
Remove the 4 screws and combination meter.

6. REMOVE LOWER PANEL
(a) Remove the front door scuff plate RH.
(b) Remove the cowl side trim RH.
(c) Remove the 2 bolts, 3 screws and lower panel.

7. REMOVE CENTER CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
(a) Using a screwdriver, pry out the center cluster finish panel.

HINT : Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

(b) Disconnect the connector, then remove the center cluster finish panel.

8. REMOVE RADIO ASSEMBLY
Remove the 4 screws and radio assembly.





PROCEDURE

1. CLUSTER FINISH PANEL

(a) Set the paper pattern for the cluster finish panel.
(b) Bore a hole at the portion marked A in the illustration.

Hole diameter : 6 mm

(c) Cut the area marked B indicated in the illustration.

NOTICE:
File the cut surface of the edges until smooth.





2. LOWER PANEL

(a) Set the paper patterns for the lower panel, as shown in the illustration.
(b) Bore 2 holes as marked.

Hole diameter : 6 mm.







(c) Set the paper pattern for the glove compartment box, as shown in the illustration.

(d) Cut the indicated area.

NOTICE:
File the cut surface of the edges until smooth.





3. INSTRUMENT PANEL

(a) Set the paper pattern for the instrument panel, as shown in the illustration.
(b) Cut the indicated area

NOTICE : File the cut surface of the edges until smooth.







4. WRAP WITH VINYL TAPE

Wrap the wire harness of the switch for driver with vinyl tape.

NOTICE :
Wrap the vinyl tape overlapping half of the tape width.







5. PASTE STICKER
Paste the sticker, "SWITCH IN GLOVE BOX", on the upper surface of the airbag off indicator, as shown in the illustration.







6. WRAP AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR WIRE HARNESS WITH VINYL SHEET
Wrap vinyl sheet around the wire harness between the end of airbag off indicator and the end of corrugated tube

Sheet size : 40 mm x 40 mm.







ASSEMBLY

1. INSTALL AIRBAG CUT-OFF SWITCH

(a) Install the airbag cut-off switches to each bracket.







(b) Install the airbag cut-off switch assembly to the lower panel.

HINT : Install the driver's side switch to the LH side and the other one to the RH side.







2. INSTALL AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR BRACKET
Install the bracket to the cluster finish panel with the bolt and nut.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION :
When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness and connector.


NOTICE:
After binding the wire harness with a band clamp, cut off the excess.





1. PASTE URETHANE SHEET

(a) Cut the vinyl sheet all adhesive stored in the Sub-wire harness kit to a size of 20 X 50 mm.

Vinyl sheet all adhesive : 20 mm X 50 mm

(b) Paste the vinyl sheet all adhesive to the edge of the striker bracket, as shown in the illustration.







2. INSTALL AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR

(a) Wrap urethane sheet to the wire harness around the contact point of the wire harness and cut surface of the instrument panel.

Sheet size : 80 mm x 130 mm

(b) Temporarily install the airbag off indicator.

(c) Pass the wire harness of the airbag off indicator through the hole of the reworked instrument panel to the steering column area and lower panel area.
(d) Install the combination meter.
(e) Install the cluster finish panel.
(f) Install the airbag off indicator to the bracket.





3. INSTALL LOWER PANEL

(a) Disconnect the front passenger airbag connector.
(b) Remove the connector cover from the bracket.
(c) Remove the connector cover from the connector.
(d) Pass the wire harness of the driver's side switch to the column area along the wire harness of the indicator.







(e) Connect all connectors of the switches.

(1) Connect the connector of the passenger airbag and passenger's side switch
(2) Connect the connector of the instrument panel wire harness for passenger airbag and passenger's side switch.
(3) Connect the connectors of the airbag off indicator and airbag cut-off switches.







(f) Wrap vinyl tape around wire harness several times, as shown in the illustration.





(g) Wrap vinyl sheet around the connecting connector in the process of (d).

Sheet size : 150 mm x 200 mm

(h) Wrap vinyl tape around the vinyl sheet.





(i) Bind the wire harness with a band clamp as indicated in the illustration.
(j) Temporarily bind the wire harness with a band clamp, marked B indicated in the illustration.
(k) Install the lower panel.
(l) Additionally tighten the band clamp indicated by B.





4. INSTALL SUB WIRE HARNESS

(a) Remove the bolt of J / B No. 1.
(b) Disconnect the connector and turn J / B No. 1.
(c) Disconnect the connector on the back side of J / B No. 1 shown in the illustration and replace it with the sub wire harness connector.
(d) Return J / B No. 1 to its original position.





(e) Disconnect the cowl wire harness and instrument panel wire harness indicated in the illustration from J / B No. 1 and connect it to the sub wire harness.
(f) Connect the sub wire harness to where the connector is disconnected in the previous process.





(g) Connect the connector of the airbag off indicator and sub wire harness.
(h) Bind the wire harness with 2 band clamps.





5. FIX WIRE HARNESS OF DRIVER'S SIDE SWITCH

(a) Disconnect the driver airbag connector from the spiral cable back side.
(b) Open the wire harness clamp.





(c) Connect the connector of the driver's side switch between the instrument panel wire harness disconnected in the process of (a) and spiral cable.





(d) Bundle the excess wire harness of the driver's side switch and instrument panel wire harness, and wrap it with vinyl sheet.

Sheet size : 100 mm x 150 mm

(e) Wrap vinyl tape around the vinyl sheet.





(f) Push the excess wire harness wrapped in the process of (d) into the area between the steering column and the instrument panel wire harness.





(g) Bind the wire harness of the center cluster finish panel area with 2 band clamps and vinyl tape.

6. INSTALL ALL REMAINING PARTS

HINT : For details about installation of each part, refer to the Repair Manual.

CHECKING AFTER INSTALLATION

1. CHECK VISIBILITY OF INDICATOR LIGHT


Check if the indicator light is visible from the normal driving position by having the customer seated in the driver's seat. Also, the indicator light must be visible from the passenger's seat.





2. SRS DIAGNOSIS CHECK

About 6 seconds after turning the ignition switch to ACC or ON, check that the SRS warning light in combination meter goes off.

If the SRS warning light flashes, the connector could be disconnected or a wire in the wire harness could be broken or short circuited. If this happens, check the applicable circuit for the DTC reading. (Refer to Repair Manual).





3. CHECK OPERATION OF AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR AND AIRBAG CUT-OFF SWITCH

(a) Turn the ignition switch to ACC or ON, and check that all the indicator lights (AIRBAG, OFF) are lit.





(b) Check that the OFF indicator light goes out after approx. 5 seconds.

NOTICE:
In case that the Cut-off switch is at OFF position, the OFF indicator light stays ON.








(c) Check the operation of the OFF indicator light.





(d) Check the dimming function at night Under the condition that the ignition switch is at ACC or ON and the airbag off indicator is lit, turn the light control switch to TAIL position and check that the indicator light dims.
