AIRBAG DEACTIVATION (SUPPLEMENT)
This Technical Service Bulletin provides you with the installation instructions for the Airbag Cut Off Switches, Off Indicator and Wiring Harnesses necessary for the Airbag Deactivation procedure adopted by Transport Canada. These instructions include the installation procedure requirements for the following conditions :
1. Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for driver side and passenger side)
2. Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for driver side only)
3. Airbag Cut Off Switch Kit (for passenger side only)
NOTE: Be sure to explain the method of operation of the airbag deactivation system and also provide your customer with a copy of the owner's manual supplement.

NOTE:
Airbag Cut Off Switches are ON / OFF Switches.

PREPARATION
CAUTION:
Work must be started more than 90 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the "LOCK" position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery. (The SRS is equipped with a back-up power source. If work is started within 90 seconds from disconnecting the negative (-) terminal cable of the battery, the SRS may be deployed.)
HINT:
For details about removal of each part, refer to the Repair Manual.
1. REMOVE CENTER CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
2. REMOVE CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
(a) Remove the 3 screws.
(b) Remove the cluster finish, then disconnect the connector.
(c) Remove the clock, No. 1 resistor and No. 2 resistor from the panel
3. REMOVE LOWER FINISH PANEL
(a) Remove the 2 screws and hood opening lever.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts and lower finish panel then disconnect the connector.
4. REMOVE NO. 1 SAFETY PAD INSERT
5. REMOVE COLUMN LOWER COVER
While turning the steering wheel right / left, remove the 3 screws and column lower cover.
6. REMOVE NO. 2 FINISH PANEL
7. DISCONNECT FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG CONNECTOR
(a) Pry out the glove compartment door finish plate.
(b) Remove the airbag connector from the glove compartment door finish plate.
c) Disconnect the airbag connector.
NOTICE:
When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness and connector.
8. REMOVE GLOVE COMPARTMENT
9. REMOVE RADIO ASSEMBLY.
PROCEDURE :
1. CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
(a) Cut the rib " A " so that the paper pattern for cluster finish panel can be positioned correctly.
NOTICE:
File the cut surface of the edges until smooth.
(b) Set the paper pattern for cluster finish panel on the cluster finish panel.
(c) Bore a hole at the position marked B in the illustration.
Hole diameter : 6
(d) Cut the area marked C indicated in the illustration.
NOTICE : File the cut surface of the edges until smooth.
e) Cut the rib " D ".
NOTICE:
File the cut surface of the edges until smooth.
2. PROCESS GLOVE COMPARTMENT
(a) Fold the paper pattern for glove compartment along the folding line , then set it over the glove compartment.
(b) Bore the 4 holes at the positions marked A in the illustration.
HINT:
Make sure to bore holes precisely so that space between each hole is identical to that on the paper pattern.
(c) Bore the 2 holes at the positions marked B in the illustration.
Hole diameter : 6
(d) Cut out a square at the same place as that on the paper pattern.
Square size : 70 mm x 30 mm
NOTICE :
File the cut surface of the edges until smooth.
3. PASTE STICKER
Paste the sticker , " SWITCH IN GLOVE BOX ", on the upper surface of the airbag off indicator , as shown in the illustration.
4. WRAP AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR WIRE HARNESS WITH VINYL SHEET
Wrap the wire harness between the end of airbag off indicator and the end of corrugated tube with vinyl sheet. Vinyl sheet : 40 mm X 40 mm .
ASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL AIRBAG CUT - OFF SWITCH
(a) Install the driver's side switch and passenger's side switch to the glove compartment.
HINT :
Install the driver's side switch to the LH side and the other one to the RH side.
(b) Bind the long wire harness of the driver's side switch with a band clamp , as shown in the illustration.
2. INSTALL AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR
(a) Install the indicator to the cluster finish panel with the bolt and nut.
(b) Bind the wire harness with 2 band clamps.
INSTALLATION
CAUTION :
When handling the airbag connector , take care not to damage the airbag wire harness and connector.
NOTICE:
After binding the wire harness with the band clamp , cut off the excess.
1. TEMPORARILY INSTALL CLUSTER FINISH PANEL AND GLOVE COMPARTMENT
2. FIX WIRE HARNESS AROUND GLOVE COMPARTMENT
(a) Connect all connectors of switches around glove compartment.
(1) Connect the connector of the passenger airbag and passenger's side switch.
(2) Connect the connector of the instrument panel wire harness for passenger airbag and passenger's side switch.
(3) Connect the connectors of the airbag off indicator and airbag cut - off switches.
(b) Bind the wire harness with 2 band clamps , as shown in the illustration.
3. FIX WIRE HARNESS AROUND CENTER CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
(a) Connect one end of the sub wire harness to the defogger switch connector of the cowl wire harness and another end to the defogger switch.
(b) Bind the wire harness in front of the heater control cable with 3 band clamps , as shown in the illustration.
4. FIX WIRE HARNESS AROUND STEERING COLUMN
a) Disconnect the connector of instrument panel No. 2 wire harness , then install the sub wire harness to each connector of the instrument panel No. 2 wire harness.
(b) Fix the wire harness with the clamp and band clamp , as shown in the illustration. .
(c) Disconnect the driver airbag connector from the spiral cable back side.
(d) Connect one end of the wire harness of the driver's side switch to the cowl wire , and connect another end to the spiral cable.
e) Bind the connector which connects the instrument panel wire harness and driver's side switch to the instrument panel wire harness side with a band clamp.
(f) Bundle the excess wire harness of the driver's side switch , bind it with 2 band clamps.
NOTICE :
After fixing the wire harness , tilt the steering column and check if the wire harness is caught or pulled out.
5. INSTALL REMAINING PARTS
CHECKING AFTER INSTALLATION
1. CHECK VISIBILITY OF INDICATOR LIGHT
Check if the indicator light is visible from the normal driving position by having the customer seated in the driver's seat. Also , the indicator light must be visible from the passenger's seat.
2. SRS DIAGNOSIS CHECK
About 6 seconds after turning the ignition switch to ACC or ON check that the SRS warning light in combination meter goes off.
If the SRS warning light flashes , the connector could be disconnected or a wire in the wire harness could be broken or short circuited. If this happens , check the applicable circuit for the DTC reading. ( Refer to Repair Manual ) .
3. CHECK OPERATION OF AIRBAG OFF INDICATOR AND AIRBAG CUT - OFF SWITCH
(a) Turn the ignition switch to ACC or ON , and check that all the indicator lights ( AIRBAG , OFF ) are lit.
(b) Check that the OFF indicator light goes out after approx. 6 seconds.
NOTICE:
In case that the airbag cut - off switch is at OFF position , the OFF indicator light stays ON.
(c) Check the operation of the OFF indicator light.
(d) Check the dimming function at night under the condition that the ignition switch is at ACC or ON and the airbag off indicator is lit , turn the light control switch to TAIL position and check that the indicator light dims.
