AVALON, CAMRY, CAMRY SOLARA, (SOLARA)
REAR AXLE HUB & BEARING ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT
OPERATION FLOW CHART

Refer to the list of affected VINs sorted by Model and Serial Numbers (last six digits). (Appendix A shown)
As always verify TDN to assure the vehicle is eligible and has not been completed by another dealer.

^ SST 09843-1 8020 or equivalent wire
NOTE:
Scan tool may be used instead of SST. Please follow proper instructions when using scan tool.
COMPONENTS
WORK PROCEDURE
A. VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. INSPECTION FOR SOLARA ONLY (CAMRY AND AVALON GO TO STEP 2)
(a) Locate the white label on the backside of the backing plate on both rear axles.
(b) If the date on the label is "3/28/0" or the label is missing or unreadable go to step 2 (PREPARE THE VEHICLE).
(c) If the date on both labels is not "3/28/0 skip a head to the Step SSC COMPLETION LABEL INSTALLATION.
2. PREPARE THE VEHICLE
(a) Automatic Transmissions - Leave the vehicle in "Park"
Manual Transmissions - Shift the vehicle into "1st gear or "Reverse".
(b) Raise the vehicle on a lift.
(c) Remove the rear wheels.
3. REMOVE THE REAR BRAKES
(a) Drum Brakes
(1) Remove Drums
(b) Disc Brakes
(1) Remove the 2 bolts holding each brake caliper.
(2) Remove the rotor.
(c) Secure the caliper in a safe position (with shop wire or equivalent) and remove the disc.
NOTE:
^ Do not allow the caliper to hang from the flexable hose.
4. INSPECT AXLE HUB FLANGE
(a) Look at the axle hub flange to determine if the hub is Type A, Type B, or Type C.
NOTE:
^ Type A: The groove is on the outside of the flange.
^ Type B: No groove on the flange.
^ :Type C: The groove is in the center of the flange.
(b) If either hub is Type A = Replace Hub. Proceed to Section B, B, REAR AXLE HUB REMOVAL.
(c) If both hubs are Type B or Type C the vehicle is not affected by this SSC. Skip to Section D BRAKE REINSTALLATION.
NOTE:
Type A = NG (REPLACE)
Type B = OK
Type C = OK
B. REAR AXLE HUB REMOVAL
1. REMOVE THE REAR AXLE HUB ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the 4 bolts and rear axle hub.
NOTE:
Be careful not to damage the flange at surface of the speed sensor.
(b) Remove and dispose of the 0-Ring.
C. REAR AXLE HUB INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL new rear hub
(a) Coat a new 0-Ring (p/n 90301-63003) with multi-purpose grease.
(b) Install the 0-Ring to the rear axle carrier.
(c) Install the appropriate new rear axle hub assembly and torque the 4 mounting bolts.
TORQUE: 80 Nm (820 kgf.cm, 59 ft-lbf)
FOR ABS hubs, be careful not to damage or allow any foreign objects to come into contact with the sensor rotor.
D. BRAKE REINSTALLATION
1. FOR VEHICLES WITH DRUM BRAKES REINSTALL BRAKE DRUM.
2. FOR VEHICLES WITH DISC BRAKES
(a) Reinstall the brake disc.
(b) Reinstall the brake caliper and torque the 2 mounting bolts.
TORQUE: 47 Nm (475 kgf.cm, 34 ft.lbf)
3. REINSTALL THE REAR WHEELS AND TORQUE THE LUG NUTS
TORQUE: 103 Nm (10 50 Kgf.cm, 34 ft.lbs)
E. TEST THE BRAKES
1. TEST THE PARKING BRAKES
2. TEST DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO CHECK PROPER FUNCTIONING OF THE BRAKES
3. FOR VEHICLES WITH ABS,
NOTE:
The following directions are set for SST 09843-18020. Scan tools can be used in place of the SST. Please follow proper scan tool instructions.
(a) Make sure that the ABS indicator light goes on for 3 seconds when the ignition switch is turned ON.
(b) Check the speed sensor signal.
(1) Turn the ignition switch OFF.
(2) Using SST 09843-18020 (or equivalent wire) connect terminals Ts and E1 of DLC1.
(3) Start Engine.
(4) Check that the ABS warning light blinks.
NOTE:
If the ABS warning light does not blink, inspect the the ABS warning light circuit.
(5) Drive the vehicle straight forward at 28-34 mph for several seconds.
NOTE:
If the brake is applied during the check, the check routine must be started again.
(6) Stop the vehicle.
(7) Using SST 09843-18202 (or equivalent wire) connect terminals Tc and E1 DLC1.
(8) Read the number of blinks of the ABS warning light.
^ If every sensor is normal, a normal code will register (A cycle of 0.25 sec. OFF is repeated)
^ If 2 or more malfunctions are indicated at the same time, the lowest number code will be displayed first.
(9) After checking, disconnect terminals Ts and E1 Tc and E1 of DLC1, and turn ignition switch OFF.
SSC COMPLETION LABEL INSTALLATION
A. After completing the repair and before returning the vehicle to the owner an SSC completion label that is enclosed in the owner's notification must be affixed to the left front door hinge post near the check strap.
B. The label is to be filled out as follows:
^ Write in SSC Y02
^ Write in date of repair.
^ Write in your dealer code.
C. Additional SSC completion labels in sheets of 50 (P/N 004 10-0 1917) may be ordered through the non-parts system on a 1450 order form or through the TDN system.
