Introduction

Some 1999 - 2002 model year TMMC Corolla engines may exhibit squealing and/or rattling noises coming from the engine compartment during vehicle operation, especially during deceleration at slow speeds after cold soak The Accessory Drive Belt and Belt Tensioner Assembly have been improved to correct this condition.

Applicable
^ 1999 - 2002 model year TMMC Corolla vehicles with VINs BEFORE the Production Vehicles Change Effective VIN listed below. Corolla vehicles built at NUMMI are not applicable.

Warranty Information

Applicable Warranty*:
This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Repair Procedure

Replace Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner Sub-Assembly as indicated in the Timing Chain Procedure Installation procedure of the Repair Manual, step 9.





For your reference, page numbers are provided for each model year.

After replacing the Belt Tensioner Assembly:





1. Fit a wrench on the hexagonal portion of the Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner swing arm (indicated by arrow).

2. Slowly operate the Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner at least four times through its full stroke. (It should take at least 3 seconds to work it through one full stroke.) This will release any air from the Belt Tensioner Assembly and prime it for proper operation.
