UNINTENDED POWER REAR WINDOW ACTIVATION (REVISED)
Some owners of 1999 - 2001 model year 4Runner vehicles may complain of unintended or accidental rear window activation. In order to address these concerns, an updated Back Door ECU and Wireless Transmitter have been adopted.
APPLICABLE VEHICLES:
1999 - 2001 model year 4Runners with factory keyless entry systems.
PRODUCTION CHANGE INFORMATION:
NOTE:
Please determine where the vehicle falls in VIN range above, and order ONLY the parts associated with the Repair Procedure number(s) listed. (Please refer to the "Parts Information" of this bulletin.)
PARTS INFORMATION:
REPAIR PROCEDURE #1:
Replace the Relay Assembly, Power Window, No. 1 (Back Door ECU).
1. Remove the Back Door Trim Panel.
a. Remove the assist strap hole cover and unbolt the assist strap.
b. Using a trim tool, remove the back door trim panel (see illustration).
NOTE:
- If dedicated trim removal tools are not available, wrap a flat screwdriver with masking tape to protect the rear door paint from damage.
- When removing the back door trim, be careful not to lose the seal gaskets on the clips.
2. Remove the Back Door ECU.
a. Disconnect the ECU to harness connector.
b. Remove the Back Door Service Hole Cover. Take care not to damage the 3 white plastic retention clips.
c. Place the panel (ECU side up) over a slightly open vice (open 1/2" at maximum), so that the outer portion of the rivet hole area is supported by the vice.
d. Using a 3.5 mm drill bit, drill out the rivet heads.
NOTE:
Ensure that the drill bit is as close to perpendicular as possible to prevent damage to the edge of the rivet holes during the drilling process.
CAUTION:
Be sure to wear proper eye and hand protection during this process.
3. Remove the Back Door ECU.
4. Install the new Back Door ECU.
- Re secure the new ECU with 2 new Rivets (P/N 90269 05035).
NOTE:
To ensure proper water intrusion protection, make sure that the rivet is properly inserted into the securing hole before affixing it. Refer to the warning illustrations.
E. Reassemble in reverse order of disassembly.
F. If Repair Procedure #2 is not required for this vehicle, reprogram the original remotes and verify proper operation.
REPAIR PROCEDURE #2:
Replace the Wireless Transmitters.
A. Verify that you have received updated Wireless Transmitters (P/N 89742 35021).
B. Program the new transmitters according to the Repair Manual.
C. Verify proper operation.
