Introduction
Under certain conditions, some 2000 and 2001 model year 5S-FE equipped Camry and Solara vehicles may exhibit a M.I.L. "ON" with DTC P0300 (Random Multiple Cylinder Misfire). These vehicles may also exhibit a hard to start, start and stall, or rough idle condition when cold. ^ 2000 - 2001 model year 5SFE Camry and Solara vehicles.

Warranty Information

Applicable Warranty*:
This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

** Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Repair Procedure

STEP 1:

Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

STEP 2:

Remove and replace the ECM per instructions in the 2001 Camry Repair Manual, Pub. No. RM819U, Volume 2, page SF-64.

STEP 3:

1. Connect a hand-held vacuum pump to the throttle opener and apply vacuum.

2. Verify that the throttle lever contacts the throttle stop screw with no clearance between the two as shown in the diagram in the 2001 Camry Repair Manual, Pub. No. RM819U, Volume 2, on page SF-33.

3. Then verify that the accelerator cable, from the accelerator pedal or from the cruise control unit, is not overly tight at the throttle body adjustment.

NOTE:
^ There should be enough play in the cable so that with the throttle fully closed the cable housing can be moved without moving the throttle valve.
^ The cable should not seem taut to the touch.

4. Once you have finished this inspection and adjustment verify that the throttle can achieve a fully open position.

STEP 4:

1. Remove and inspect all spark plugs for carbon fouling.

2. If one or two spark plugs are fouled, replace those spark plugs and the corresponding fuel injectors. Fuel injector removal and installation instructions can be found in the 2001 Camry Repair Manual, Pub. No. RM819U, Volume 2, on pages SF-22 and SF-25, respectively.

3. If all spark plugs are fouled, replace only spark plugs - do not replace the fuel injectors in this instance.

4. Install and torque all spark plugs.

STEP 5:

Replace the negative battery cable and tighten. Start and drive the vehicle at least two times to verify proper operation of all components and removal of M.I.L. "ON" condition.

NOTE:
In the interest of ensuring a satisfying ownership experience for our customers, ensure that they are aware of the following information:
^ This vehicle is designed to run best on name brand regular fuel (87 Octane).
^ Attempting to start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal depressed can lead to some amount of misfire and possibly contribute to causing a M.I.L. "ON" condition.
