Introduction

Some 2002 model year Tacoma trucks equipped with a 4-cylinder 2RZ-FE engine may exhibit a M.l.L. "ON" condition with a Diagnostic Trouble Code P0136 stored in the Engine Control Module or ECM (SAE term: Powertrain Control Module/PCM). The updated ECM (PCM) has been made available to prevent repeat failures of the sub-O2 sensor. Use the following procedure to replace the ECM (PCM).

Warranty Information

Applicable warranty *

This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emissions Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 96 months or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Repair Procedure

1. Follow the Repair Manual diagnostic procedure for DTC P0136 on TIS or the 2002 model year Tacoma Repair Manual, Volume 1, page DI-49.





2. If diagnosis leads to replacement of sub-02 sensor, install new sub-02 and updated ECM. Refer to Engine Control Module (ECM) location on TIS or the 2002 model year Repair Manual, Volume 2, page SF-55.
