Overhaul
OVERHAULHINT: Overhaul the RH side by the same procedures with LH side.
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
2. REMOVE EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY
3. REMOVE SPEED SENSOR REAR LH
a. Remove the bolt and ABS speed sensor from the axle carrier.
4. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH
a. Remove the cotter pin and lock cap.
b. While applying the brakes, remove the nut.
c. Place matchmarks on the drive shaft and differential side gear shaft.
d. Remove the 4 nuts and washers, and disconnect the drive shaft from the differential side gear shaft.
e. Remove the drive shaft from the axle carrier.
5. FIX AXLE ASSY RR LH
NOTICE:
^ After disconnecting the drive shaft from the axle hub, work carefully so as not to damage the ABS speed sensor rotor serration on the drive shaft.
^ The hub bearing could be damaged if it is subjected to the vehicle weight, such as when moving the vehicle with the drive shaft removed. Therefore, if it is absolutely necessary to place the vehicle weight on the hub bearing, first support it with SST.
SST 09608-16042 (09608-02021, 09608-02041)
6. INSPECT REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH
a. Check to see that there is no remarkable play in the outboard joint.
b. Check to see that the inboard joint slides smoothly in the thrust direction.
c. Check to see that there is no remarkable play in the radial direction of the inboard joint.
d. Check the boots for damage.
7. SEPARATE REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT NO.2 CLAMP
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the boot clamp.
8. SEPARATE REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the boot clamp.
9. SEPARATE REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT
a. Remove the inboard joint boot from the inboard joint assembly.
10. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT ASSY
a. Place matchmarks on the inboard joint tulip and outboard joint shaft.
NOTICE: Do not punch the marks.
b. Remove the inboard joint tulip from the outboard joint shaft.
c. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring.
d. Place matchmarks on the outboard joint shaft and tripod.
NOTICE: Do not punch the marks.
e. Using a brass bar and hammer, remove the tripod from the outboard joint shaft.
NOTICE: Do not tap the roller.
11. SEPARATE REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT NO. 2 CLAMP
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the boot clamp.
12. SEPARATE REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the boot clamp.
13. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT ASSY
a. Remove the outboard joint boot from the outboard joint assembly.
NOTICE: Do not disassemble the outboard joint.
14. REMOVE REAR WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR NO.1 LH
a. Mount outboard joint shaft in a soft jaw vise.
b. Using a screwdriver and hammer, remove the No. 2 dust deflector.
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the ABS speed sensor rotor.
15. REMOVE OUTBOARD JOINT END COVER
a. Using SST and a press, remove the end cover.
SST 09527-17011, 09950-60010 (09951-00320), 09950-70010 (09951-07150)
16. INSTALL OUTBOARD JOINT END COVER
a. Using SST and a press, install the end cover.
SST 09223-15020, 09950-70010 (09951-07150)
17. INSTALL REAR WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR NO.1 LH
a. Using SST and a press, install a new No. 1 dust deflector.
SST 09309-36010, 09316-20011
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the ABS speed sensor rotor.
18. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT
HINT: Before installing the boots, wrap the spline of the outboard joint shaft with vinyl tape to prevent the boots from being damaged.
a. Install the outboard joint boot, 2 outboard joint boot clamps, 2 inboard joint boot clamps and inboard joint boot.
b. Before assembling the boots, pack the outboard joint and boot with grease in the boot kit.
Grease capacity: 107 - 117 g (3.77 - 4.13 oz.)
c. Make sure that the 2 boots are on the shaft groove.
19. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT NO. 2 CLAMP
a. Using a screwdriver, install the outboard joint boot clamp.
20. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP
a. Using a screwdriver, install the outboard joint boot clamp.
21. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT ASSY
a. Place the beveled side of the tripod axial spline toward the outboard joint.
b. Align the matchmarks placed before removal.
c. Using a brass bar and hammer, tap in the tripod to the outboard joint shaft.
NOTICE: Do not tap the roller.
d. Using a snap ring expander, install a new snap ring.
e. Pack the inboard joint and boot with grease in the boot kit.
Grease capacity: 180 - 190 g (6.35 - 6.70 oz.)
f. Align the matchmarks placed before removal, and install the inboard joint tulip to the outboard joint shaft.
22. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT
a. Install the inboard joint boot to the inboard joint assembly.
23. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP
a. Using a screwdriver, install the inboard joint boot clamp.
24. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT NO.2 CLAMP
a. Using a screwdriver, install the inboard joint boot clamp.
25. INSPECT REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH
a. Check to see that there is no remarkable play in the outboard joint.
b. Check to see that the inboard joint slides smoothly in the thrust direction.
c. Check to see that there is no remarkable play in the radial direction of the inboard joint.
d. Check the boots for damage.
e. Make sure that the 2 boots are not stretched or contracted when the drive shaft is at standard length.
Standard length: 607.7 ± 5.0 mm (23.93 ± 0.20 inch)
26. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH
a. Install the drive shaft to the axle carrier.
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the boots and ABS speed sensor rotor to the drive shaft and oil seal of the axle hub bearing.
b. Align the matchmarks and connect the drive shaft to the side gear shaft.
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the boots and end cover.
c. Using 8 mm hexagon wrench, install the 3 washers and 6 hexagon bolts, while applying the brakes.
Torque: 56 Nm, (571 kgf-cm, 41 ft. lbs.)
d. While applying brakes, using a socket wrench (30 mm), install a nut.
Torque: 216 Nm, (2,200 kgf-cm, 159 ft. lbs.)
e. Install the lock cap and a new cotter pin.
If the holes for the cotter pin are not aligned, tighten the nut further up to 10°.
27. INSTALL SPEED SENSOR REAR LH
a. Install the speed sensor with the bolt.
Torque: 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.)
28. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
29. INSTALL EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY
30. CHECK EXHAUST GAS LEAK
31. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT
