Introduction
On some 2003 Corolla and Matrix vehicles, customers may feel that there is no air flow from the center vents. A mode damper control cable adjustment will correct this concern.

This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.
* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.
Repair Procedure
1. Verify Customer Concern.
A. With the ignition on, turn the blower control to high.
B. Turn the model control switch to defrost.
C. Turn the mode control switch counterclockwise, from defrost to bi-level mode, noting the amount of air flow coming from the center vents when in the bi-level mode.
D. Turn the mode control switch to face.
E. Turn the mode control switch clockwise, from face to bi-level mode noting the amount of air flow when in the bi-level mode.
F. If the amount of air flow from the center vents, when in the bi-level position, is noticeably less when turning the mode switch counterclockwise than it is when turning the mode switch clockwise, continue with this repair procedure.
2. Access Mode Damper Control Cable.
A. Remove the glove compartment.
a. Remove the screw from the glove compartment door stopper sub-assembly.
b. Deform the upper part of the glove compartment door assembly to release the stoppers.
c. Pull the glove compartment door assembly upward to remove it.
3. Remove Mode Damper Control Cable From Clamp.
A. Turn the mode control switch to the face position.
B. Lightly pull out on the retaining clamp.
C. Push the cable up out of the clamp.
NOTE:
Be careful not to bend the cable wire. If the cable wire bends, the mode control adjustment cannot be completed correctly.
4. Adjust Mode Damper Control Cable.
A. Install the outer cable to the cable clamp while slightly pressing it in the direction of the arrow.
5. Verify Correct Operation.
A. Operating the mode control lever, check that it properly stops at both ends of face and defrost.
B. With the ignition on, turn the blower control to high.
C. Turn the mode control switch to defrost.
D. Turn the mode control switch counterclockwise, from defrost to bi-level mode, noting the amount of air flow coming from the center vents when in the bi-level mode.
E. Turn the mode control switch to face.
F. Turn the mode control switch clockwise, from face to bi-level mode, noting the amount of air flow when in the bi-level mode.
G. The amount of air flow from the center vents, when in the bi-level position, should be the same when turning the mode switch counterclockwise or clockwise.
