Some customers may experience the instrument panel box hard to open. The following repair procedure has been developed to improve this condition.
APPLICABLE VEHICLES:
- 2003 - 2004 model year Matrix vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown below.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
Replace console box and I/P Lower Center Panel.
Refer to steps 9--16 in ETAS, 2004 model year Matrix Repair Manual: Instrument Panel/meter, Instrument Panel Sub--Assy Lower.
1. Remove Instrument Cluster Finish Panel Sub--assembly Center.
A. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 4 clips and 3 claws.
B. Disconnect connector, then, remove the instrument cluster finish panel sub--assembly center.
2. Remove Radio Receiver Assembly W/Bracket (w/o Navigation System).
3. Remove Navigation Receiver Assembly w/Bracket (w/ Navigation System).
4. Remove Floor Shift Lever Knob Sub--assembly (M/T Transaxle).
5. Remove Instrument Cluster Finish Panel Assembly Center.
A. Power point socket models only: Disengage the 5 claws and remove the switch base.
B. Remove the control knob.
C. Remove the screw.
D. Using a moulding remover, disengage the 2 clips and 7 claws, then, pull out the instrument cluster center panel.
E. Disconnect the connectors.
6. Remove Instrument Panel Box.
A. Open instrument panel box.
B. Pull the instrument panel box upward to remove it.
7. Remove Instrument Panel Finish Panel Lower Center.
A. M/T Transaxle: Remove the 3 screws.
B. A/T Transaxle: Remove the 5 screws.
C. Using a screwdriver, disengage the claws, then, remove the instrument panel finish lower center.
NOTE:
There are 2 claws on each side of the instrument panel finish lower center.
8. Reassemble in the Reverse Order of Removal.
