Shifter A/T: Service and Repair

FLOOR SHIFT ASSEMBLY (2 OF 2) [U140F]:






REMOVAL
1. REMOVE FRONT AND REAR CONSOLE BOX





2. REMOVE FLOOR SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY
a. Using a screw driver, disconnect the shift control cable from the floor shift assembly.
b. Disconnect the 2 connectors.
c. Remove the 4 bolts and floor shift assembly.
Torque: 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)

DISASSEMBLY





1. DISCONNECT O/D MAIN SWITCH TERMINAL
a. Disconnect the O/D main switch connector from the shift lever plate.
b. Disengage the secondary locking device.
c. Using a small screwdriver, release the locking lug of the terminals 2 and 4, and pull the terminals out from the rearward.





2. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER KNOB
a. Disconnect the O/D main switch lead wire from the shift lever.
b. Remove the 2 screws, shift lever knob button, compression spring, shift knob, No. 2 slide cover and detent rod.

NOTICE: Pay attention not to put unnatural load onto O/D main switch wire harness.

c. Remove the O/D main switch from the shift lever knob.
3. REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING ASSEMBLY
Pull out the position indicator housing assembly from the shift lever plate.
4. DISASSEMBLE POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING





a. Remove the lower position indicator housing.
b. Remove the indicator light wire from the lower position indicator housing.
c. Remove the bulb.
d. Remove the shift lock cover from the upper indicator housing





e. Remove the shift lock button and spring from the upper position indicator housing.
f. Remove the slide cover from the upper position indicator housing.
g. Remove the control position indicator plate from the upper position indicator housing.
5. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER AND SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT ASSEMBLY





a. Push the stopper, and remove the control shaft.





b. Using a screw driver, remove the spring nut and pin.
c. Remove the shift lever and shift lock control unit assembly.
d. Separate the shift lever and shift lock control unit.
6. REMOVE SPRING PLATE FROM SHIFT LEVER





7. REMOVE GROOVED PIN AND COMPRESSION SPRING
a. Lower the grooved pin and remove the grooved pin by turning it.

HINT: The spring may hop out, so close the tip of the shift lever with your finger.

b. Remove the compression spring from the shift lever.





8. REMOVE COLLARS
Using a screw driver and a hammer, remove the 4 collars.

REASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL 4 COLLARS
2. INSTALL COMPRESSION SPRING AND GROOVED PIN





a. Apply MP grease on the compression spring and shift lever as shown in the illustration.
b. Install the compression spring to the shift lever.





c. Squeeze the spring in the shift lever with a detent rod and insert the grooved pin to the spring from a cutout of the detent rod.
d. Pull out the detent rod and install the grooved pin by turning it.
3. INSTALL SPRING PLATE TO SHIFT LEVER
4. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER AND SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT ASSEMBLY





a. Apply MP grease to the shift lever and shift lock control unit as shown in the illustration.
b. Assemble the shift lever and shift lock control unit as shown in the illustration.
c. Place the shift lever and shift lock control unit assembly to the shift lever plate.
d. Install the control shaft.





e. Using a socket wrench, brass bar and hammer, install the pin and a new spring nut.
5. ASSEMBLE POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING
a. Install the control position indicator plate to the upper position indicator housing.
b. Install the slide cover to the upper position indicator housing.
c. Install the shift lock button and spring to the lower position indicator housing.
d. Install the bulb to the indicator light wire.
e. Install the indicator light wire to the lower position indicator housing.
f. Install the lower position indicator housing to the upper position indicator housing.
g. Install the shift lock cover.
6. INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING
7. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER KNOB





a. Apply MP grease on the detent rod as shown in the illustration.
b. Install the detent rod as shown in the illustration.

HINT: Align the cutout of the detent rod with the grooved pin.

c. Install the O/D main switch to the shift lever knob.





d. Apply MP grease to the shift lever knob and compression spring.





e. Install the No. 2 slide cover, shift knob, compression spring and shift lever knob button with the 2 screws.

NOTICE: Pay attention not to put unnatural load onto O/D main switch wire harness.

f. Install the O/D main switch lead wire to the shift lever.
8. CONNECT O/D MAIN SWITCH TERMINAL
a. Connect the 2 O/D main switch terminals to the connector.
b. Connect the connector to the shift lever plate.

INSTALLATION





Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

HINT: After installation, inspect shift lever operation.
^ When shifting it to each position, make sure that the shifting lever moves smoothly, can be moderately operated and the position indicator displays correctly.
Positions, which can be operated without pressing the shift lever knob button R -> N -> D, L -> 2 -> D -> N
Positions, which can be operated only with pressing the shift lever knob button 2 -> L -> N -> R -> P
Positions, which can be operated only with pressing the shift lever knob button, ignition switch ON and brake pedal depressed P -> R
^ When starting the engine, make sure that the vehicle moves forward when shifting from N to D position, and moves rearward when shifting to R position.
