DTC P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

DTC Detection Condition:




The camshaft position sensor (G signal) consists of a magnet iron core and pickup coil.

The G signal plate has 1 tooth on its outer circumference and is installed on the LH camshaft timing pulley. When the camshafts rotate, protrusion on the signal plate and air gap on the pickup coil change, causing fluctuations in the magnetic field and generating a voltage in the pickup coil.

The NE signal plate has 34 teeth and is mounted on the crankshaft. The NE signal sensor generates 34 signals at every engine revolution. The ECM detects the crankshaft angle and the engine revolution based on the NE signals, and the cylinder and the angle of the G2 based on the combination of the G and NE signals.

If there are no signals from the camshaft position sensor even though the engine is turning, or if the rotation of the camshaft and the crankshaft is not synchronized, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction of the sensor.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT: Read freeze frame data using the hand-held tester or the OBD II scan tool. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data from the time when a malfunction occurred.
