Initial Inspection

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

CAUTION: Be sure to perform the initialization of the occupant classification ECU if any of the following conditions occur. If the initialization is not performed, the SRS may not operate properly.
- The occupant classification ECU is replaced.
- Accessories (seatback tray, seat cover, etc.) are installed to the vehicle.
- The passenger seat is removed from the vehicle, and then reinstalled or replaced.
- The passenger airbag ON/OFF indicator light ("OFF") comes on when the passenger seat is not occupied.
- The vehicle is brought to the workshop for repair due to an accident or collision.




1. HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY (VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. With the horn button assembly installed on the vehicle, perform a visual check. If there are any defects as mentioned below, replace the horn button assembly with a new one: Cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the horn button assembly top surface or in the grooved portion.




2. HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG HAS NOT DEPLOYED)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. With the horn button assembly removed from the vehicle, perform a visual check. If there are any defects as mentioned below, replace the horn button assembly or steering wheel assembly with a new one:
- Cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the horn button assembly top surface or in the grooved portion.
- Cracks or other damage to the connectors.
- Deformation of the steering wheel assembly.




- Deformation of the horn button contact plate of the horn button assembly.




- There should be no interference between the horn button assembly and steering wheel assembly, and the clearance should be uniform all the way around when the new horn button assembly is installed on the steering wheel assembly.

CAUTION: For removal and installation procedures of the horn button assembly, see "Replacement". Be sure to follow the correct procedure.




3. FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. With the front passenger airbag assembly installed on the vehicle, perform a visual check. If there are any defects as mentioned below, replace the instrument panel with a new one:
Cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the instrument panel around the front passenger airbag assembly.




4. FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG HAS NOT DEPLOYED)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. With the front passenger airbag assembly removed from the vehicle, perform a visual check. If there are any defects as mentioned below, replace the front passenger airbag assembly, instrument panel or instrument panel reinforcement with a new one:
- Cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the front passenger airbag assembly.
- Cracks or other damage to the connectors.




- Deformation or cracks on the instrument panel or instrument panel reinforcement.

CAUTION: For removal and installation procedures of the front passenger airbag assembly, see "Replacement". Be sure to follow the correct procedure.




5. FRONT SEAT AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. With the front seat airbag assembly installed on the vehicle, perform a visual check. If there are any defects as mentioned below, replace the front seatback assembly with a new one:
Cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the front seatback assembly around the front seat airbag assembly.




6. FRONT SEAT AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG HAS NOT DEPLOYED)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. With the front seat airbag assembly removed from the vehicle, perform a visual check. If there are any defects as mentioned below, replace the front seat airbag assembly with a new one:
- Cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the front seat airbag assembly.
- Cracks or other damage to the wire harness or connector.

CAUTION: For removal and installation procedures of the front seat airbag assembly, see "Body and Frame/Seats/Service and Repair/Procedures/Front Seat Assembly LH". Be sure to follow the correct procedure.




7. CURTAIN SHIELD AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. With the curtain shield airbag assembly installed on the vehicle, perform a visual check. If there are any defects as mentioned below, replace the front pillar garnish or roof headlining assembly with a new one:
Cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the front pillar garnish or roof headlining assembly around the curtain shield airbag assembly.




8. CURTAIN SHIELD AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG HAS NOT DEPLOYED)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. With the curtain shield airbag assembly removed from the vehicle, perform a visual check. If there are any defects as mentioned below, replace the curtain shield airbag assembly with a new one:
- Cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the curtain shield airbag assembly.
- Cracks or other damage to the connector.

CAUTION: For removal and installation procedures of the curtain shield airbag assembly, see "Replacement". Be sure to follow the correct procedure.




9. INSTRUMENT PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY LOWER NO.1 (VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. With the instrument panel airbag assembly lower No.1 installed on the vehicle, perform a visual check including the following:
Cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the instrument panel airbag assembly lower No.1.




10. INSTRUMENT PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY LOWER NO.1 (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG HAS NOT DEPLOYED)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. With the instrument panel airbag assembly lower No.1 removed from the vehicle, perform a visual check. If there are any defects as mentioned below, replace the instrument panel airbag assembly lower No.1 with a new one:
- Cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the instrument panel airbag assembly lower No.1.
- Cracks or other damage to the connector.




- Deformation or cracks on the instrument panel reinforcement.

CAUTION: For removal and installation procedures of the instrument panel airbag assembly lower No.1, see "Replacement". Be sure to follow the correct procedure.

11. AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY CENTER (VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).

12. AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY CENTER (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG HAS NOT DEPLOYED)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).

13. AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY CENTER (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG HAS DEPLOYED)
a. Replace the airbag sensor assembly center.

CAUTION: For removal and installation procedures of the airbag sensor assembly center, see "Replacement". Be sure to follow the correct procedure.

HINT: The airbag sensor assembly center should be replaced after any of the airbags has deployed, as it has been subjected to the impact.

14. AIRBAG SENSOR FRONT (VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).

15. AIRBAG SENSOR FRONT (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG HAS NOT DEPLOYED)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. When the front bumper of the vehicle or its area is damaged, check if there is any damage to the airbag sensor front. If any of the airbag sensor front have defects as mentioned below, replace it with a new one:
- Cracks, dents or chips on the sensor housing.
- Cracks or other damage to the connector.
- Peeling off of the label or damage to the serial number.

16. AIRBAG SENSOR FRONT (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG HAS DEPLOYED)
a. Replace the airbag sensor front.

CAUTION: For removal and installation procedures of the airbag sensor front, See "Replacement". Be sure to follow the correct procedure.

HINT: The airbag sensor front on the impacted side should be replaced after the horn button assembly, front passenger airbag assembly or instrument panel airbag assembly lower No.1 has deployed.

17. SIDE AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY (VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).

18. SIDE AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG HAS NOT DEPLOYED)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. When the center pillar of the vehicle or its area is damaged, check if there is any damage to the side airbag sensor assembly. If there are any defects as mentioned below, replace the side airbag sensor assembly with a new one:
- Cracks, dents or chips on the sensor housing.
- Cracks or other damage to the connector.
- Peeling off of the label or damage to the serial number.

CAUTION: For removal and installation procedures of the side airbag sensor assembly, see "Replacement". Be sure to follow the correct procedure.

19. SIDE AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG HAS DEPLOYED)
a. Replace the side airbag sensor assembly.

CAUTION: For removal and installation procedures of the side airbag sensor assembly,see "Replacement". Be sure to follow the correct procedure.

HINT: The side airbag sensor assembly on the impacted side should be replaced after the front seat airbag assembly and curtain shield airbag assembly have deployed.

20. AIRBAG SENSOR REAR (VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).

21. AIRBAG SENSOR REAR (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG HAS NOT DEPLOYED)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. When the quarter panel of the vehicle or its area is damaged, check if there is any damage to the airbag sensor rear. If there are any defects as mentioned below, replace the airbag sensor rear with a new one:
- Cracks, dents or chips on the sensor housing.
- Cracks or other damage to the connector.
- Peeling off of the label or damage to the serial number.

CAUTION: For removal and installation procedures of the airbag sensor rear, see "Replacement". Be sure to follow the correct procedure.

22. AIRBAG SENSOR REAR (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG HAS DEPLOYED)
a. Replace the airbag sensor rear.

CAUTION: For removal and installation procedures of the airbag sensor rear,see "Replacement". Be sure to follow the correct procedure.

HINT: The airbag sensor rear on the impacted side should be replaced after the curtain shield airbag assembly has deployed.

23. SEAT POSITION AIRBAG SENSOR (VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).

24. SEAT POSITION AIRBAG SENSOR (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. Even if the airbag was not deployed, check if there is any damage to the seat position airbag sensor.
If there are any defects as mentioned below, replace the seat position airbag sensor with a new one:
- Cracks, dents or chips on the sensor housing.
- Cracks or other damage to the connector.

CAUTION: For removal and installation procedures of the seat position airbag sensor, see "Replacement". Be sure to follow the correct procedure.

25. OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION ECU (VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).

26. OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION ECU (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. Even if the airbag was not deployed, check if there is any damage to the occupant classification ECU.
If there are any defects as mentioned below, replace the occupant classification ECU with a new one:
- Cracks, dents or chips on the sensor housing.
- Cracks or other damage to the connectors.

CAUTION: For removal and installation procedures of the occupant classification ECU, see "Replacement". Be sure to follow the correct procedure.

27. WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).

28. WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
a. Perform a diagnostic system check (Refer to Diagnostic Strategies).
b. Check for breaks in all wires of the SRS wire harness and exposed conductors.
c. Check to see if the SRS wire harness connectors are cracked or chipped.

HINT: The SRS wire harness is integrated with the engine room main wire, instrument panel wire, instrument panel wire assembly, floor wire and floor wire No.2.
