Component Tightening Specifications and Sequences
Cylinder HeadUsing several steps, uniformly install and tighten the 10 cylinder head set bolts and plate washers with a 10 mm bi-hexagon wrench in the order shown in the illustration.
Torque 70 Nm (714 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.)
Mark the front of the cylinder head bolts with paint.
Retighten the cylinder head bolts by 90° as shown in the illustration.
Check that the paint mark is now at a 90° angle to the front.
Cylinder head set bolt
Standard bolt length 141.3 to 142.7 mm (5.563 to 5.618 inch)
Maximum bolt length 144.2 mm (5.677 inch)
CYLINDER HEAD FOR WARPAGE
Using a precision straightedge and feeler gauge, measure the warpage of the contact surfaces of the cylinder block and manifolds.
Maximum warpage 0.08 mm (0.0032 inch)
If the warpage is greater than the maximum, replace the cylinder head sub-assembly.
CYLINDER HEAD FOR CRACKS
Using a dye penetrant, inspect the combustion chamber, intake ports, exhaust ports and cylinder block surface for cracks.
If cracked, replace the cylinder head.
Intake Manifold
Throttle body x Intake manifold 30 Nm (305 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.)
Intake manifold x Cylinder head 30 Nm (305 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.)
Camshaft Bearing Cap
Using several steps, uniformly tighten the 20 bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Torque:
No. 1 and No. 2 bearing cap 29.5 Nm (301 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.)
No. 3 bearing cap 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.)
Main Bearing Cap
Using several steps, uniformly install and tighten the 10 bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Torque 40 Nm (408 kgf-cm, 30 ft. lbs.)
Mark the front of the bearing cap bolts with paint.
Retighten the 10 bearing cap bolts by 90° in the same sequence.
Check that the paint marks are now at a 90° angle to the front.
Check that the crankshaft turns smoothly.
Rod Bearing Cap
Check that the front mark of the connecting rod cap is facing in the correct direction.
NOTICE: Match the numbered connecting rod cap with the connecting rod.
Using a 12 mm socket wrench, tighten the bolts in several passes to the specified torque.
Torque 24.5 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.)
Mark the front of the connecting rod bolts with paint.
Retighten the cap bolts 90° as shown in the illustration.
Crankshaft Pulley
Torque 180 Nm (1,835 kgf-cm, 133 ft. lbs.)
Flex Plate
Using several steps, uniformly install and tighten the 8 bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Torque 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.)
Oil Pump
Oil pump drive shaft sprocket x Oil pump 29.5 Nm (301 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.)
Oil pump cover x Oil pump 8.8 Nm (90 kgf-cm, 78 inch lbs.)
Oil pump relief valve x Oil pump 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.)
Oil pump strainer x Oil pump 8.8 Nm (90 kgf-cm, 78 inch lbs.)
Oil pump x Cylinder block 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.)
Exhaust Manifold
Exhaust manifold x Cylinder head 37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.)
No. 1 exhaust manifold heat insulator x Exhaust manifold 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)
No. 1 and No. 2 manifold stay x Cylinder block, Exhaust manifold 44 Nm (449 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.)
Front exhaust pipe assembly x Exhaust manifold 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.)
Water Pump
