Component Tightening Specifications and Sequences

Cylinder Head

HINT: The cylinder head bolts are tightened in 3 successive steps.

Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads and under the heads of the cylinder head bolts.

Using several steps, uniformly install and tighten the 10 cylinder head bolts with plate washers with a 10 mm bi-hexagon wrench in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Torque 39 Nm (398 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.)

Mark the front of the cylinder head bolt head with paint.
Retighten the cylinder head bolts by 90° in the same order as in step (c).
Retighten the cylinder head bolts by an additional 90°.
Check that the painted mark is at a 180° from the original position.

CYLINDER HEAD SET BOLT
Using vernier calipers, measure the minimum diameter of the elongated thread at the measuring point.
Standard outside diameter 10.76 to 10.97 mm (0.4236 to 0.4319 inch)
Minimum outside diameter 10.40 mm (0.4094 inch)

HINT: If a visual check reveals no excessively thin areas, check the center of the bolt (see illustration) and find the area that has the smallest diameter.

Intake Manifold
Torque 25 Nm (255 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.)

Camshaft Bearing Cap

Provisionally install the No. 1 camshaft bearing cap.
Check the proper location of each No. 2 camshaft bearing cap and install each one.

Tighten the bolts in the order shown in the illustration.
Torque:
12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) for bolt A
16 Nm (158 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) for bolts except bolt A

Check that each timing mark is set in the position shown in the illustration.

Main Bearing Cap

Install the crankshaft bearing cap bolts.

HINT: The main bearing cap bolts are tightened in 2 progressive steps.

Step 1
Install and uniformly tighten the 10 main bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Torque 39 Nm (398 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.)
If any of the main bearing cap bolts does not meet the torque specification, replace the main bearing cap bolt.

Step 2
Mark the front of the bearing cap bolts with paint.
Retighten the bearing cap bolts by 90° in the order above.
Check that the painted mark is now at a 90° angle to the front.
Check that the crankshaft turns smoothly.

Rod Bearing Cap

Install and alternately tighten the bolts of the connecting rod cap in several steps.
Torque 25 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.)

Mark the front side of each connecting cap bolt with paint.
Retighten the cap bolts by 90° as shown.
Check that the painted mark is now at a 90° angle to the front.
Check that the crankshaft turns smoothly.

Crankshaft Pulley
Crankshaft pulley x Crankshaft 260 Nm (2651 kgf-cm, 192 ft. lbs.)

Flex Plate

Using several steps, uniformly install and tighten the 10 bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Torque 74 Nm (755 kgf-cm, 55 ft. lbs.)

Flywheel

Using several steps, uniformly install and tighten the 10 bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Torque 27 Nm (270 kgf-cm, 20 ft. lbs.)

Mark the bolts with paint as shown in the illustration.
Retighten the bolts by 90° in the same sequence as in step (d).
Check that the paint mark of each bolt is at a 90° from the original position.

Oil Pump

Provisionally install the oil pump with the 19 bolts and 2 nuts.

NOTICE: If the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, install bolts A' and B' when installing the idle pulley with bracket since they are for this purpose.

HINT:
Bolt length:
75 mm (2.95 inch) for bolt A, B
87 mm (3.43 inch) for bolt C
95 mm (3.74 inch) for bolt D
35 mm (1.37 inch) for bolt E

Fully tighten the bolts and nuts, except bolts A, in the following order: Area 1, Area 3 and then Area 2.
Torque 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)
Fully tighten the bolts A in the following order: Area 2 and then Area 3.
Torque 46 Nm (469 kgf-cm, 34 ft. lbs.)
Fully tighten the bolts E in Area 4.
Torque 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)

Exhaust Manifold
Install a new gasket and the exhaust manifold with 8 new nuts.
Torque 36 Nm (367 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.)
