Applicability

Introduction

Some 4WD 2008 - 2009 model year Sequoia and 2007 - 2009 model year Tundra vehicles may exhibit a ticking or knocking type noise from the transfer case assembly when in 4WD around 20 - 45 mph (32 - 72 km/h). Changes have been made to the transfer case assembly. Follow the procedure in this service bulletin to address this condition.

Repair Procedure

1. Test drive the vehicle and confirm the condition.





2. Confirm noise is loudest from the front output area of the transfer case using ChassisEAR(TM) or a mechanic's stethoscope. (See Figure 1.)

Is the noise loudest near the front driveshaft output area?

^ YES - Go to step 3.

^ NO - This TSB does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis to determine the cause of the noise. Refer to the applicable Repair Manual section.

3. Is the noise present in 4WD?

^ YES - Go to step 4.

^ NO - This TSB does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis to determine the cause of the noise. Refer to the applicable Repair Manual section.

4. Replace the transfer case assembly and 4WD ECU.
