Compression Check: Testing and Inspection
ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION1. INSPECT COMPRESSION
(a) Warm up and stop the engine.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts, 2 screws and No. 1 engine under cover.
(c) Drain engine coolant (Service and Repair).
(d) Remove the front wiper motor and link (Removal).
(e) Remove the front cowl top outer panel (Removal).
(f) Remove the 2 nuts and V-bank cover.
(g) Loosen the clamp and remove the No. 2 air cleaner hose.
(h) Disconnect the ventilation hose.
(i) Disconnect the MAF connector.
(j) Using a clip remover, detach the 2 wire harness clamps.
(k) Disconnect the vacuum hose.
(l) Loosen the hose clamp and remove the 2 bolts and air cleaner with element.
(m) Remove the intake air surge tank (Removal).
(n) Remove the 6 ignition coils.
(o) Remove the 6 spark plugs.
(p) Disconnect the 6 fuel injector connectors.
(q) Inspect the cylinder compression pressure.
(1) Insert SST (compression gauge) into the spark plug hole (Procedure "A").
SST: 09992-00500
(2) While cranking the engine, measure the compression pressure (Procedure "B").
Compression pressure:
1300 kPa (13.3 kgf/cm2, 189 psi)
Minimum pressure:
1000 kPa (10.2 kgf/cm2, 145 psi)
Difference between each cylinder:
100 kPa (1.0 kgf/cm2, 15 psi)
HINT:
- Use a fully-charged battery so that the engine speed can be increased to 250 rpm or more.
- Measure the compression in as short a time as possible.
(3) Repeat procedures "A" and "B" for each cylinder.
(4) If the cylinder compression is low, pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and repeat procedures "A" and "B" for cylinders with low compression.
- If adding oil increases the compression, the piston rings and/or cylinder bore may be worn or damaged.
- If pressure stays low, a valve may be stuck or seated improperly, or there may be leakage from the gasket.
(r) Connect the 6 injector connectors.
(s) Install the 6 spark plugs.
Torque: 20 Nm (204 kgf-cm, 15 ft-lbf)
(t) Install the 6 ignition coils.
Torque: 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 in-lbf)
(u) Install the intake air surge tank (Installation).
(v) Install the air cleaner with element (Installation).
(w) Install the No. 2 air cleaner hose (Installation).
(x) Install the V-bank cover with the 2 nuts.
Torque: 7.5 Nm (76 kgf-cm, 66 in-lbf)
(y) Install the front cowl top outer panel (Installation).
(z) Install the wiper motor and link (Installation).
(aa) Add engine coolant (Service and Repair).
(ab) Install the No. 1 engine under cover with the 2 bolts and 2 screws.
for bolt - Torque: 29 Nm (296 kgf-cm, 21 ft-lbf)
for screw - Torque: 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 in-lbf)
