P0617
1GR-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0617: Starter Relay Circuit High
DTC P0617 - Starter Relay Circuit High
DESCRIPTION
While the engine is being cranked, the positive battery voltage is applied to terminal STA of the ECM. If the ECM detects the Starter Control (STA) signal while the vehicle is being driven, it determines that there is a malfunction in the STA circuit. The ECM then illuminates the MIL and sets the DTC.
This monitor runs when the vehicle is driven at 12.4 mph (20 km/h) for over 20 seconds.
*: A/T denotes Automatic Transmission models and M/T denotes Manual Transmission models.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT:
- The following troubleshooting flowchart is based on the premise that the engine is cranked normally. If the engine will not crank, proceed to the problem symptoms table Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures.
- Read freeze frame data using a Techstream. Freeze frame data record the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
PROCEDURE
1. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL)
(a) Connect a Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch ON.
(c) Turn the tester ON.
(d) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Starter Signal.
(e) Check the value displayed on the tester when the ignition switch is turned to the ON and START positions.
OK:
NG -- READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL)
OK -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS
2. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL)
(a) Disconnect the B35 park/neutral position switch or the A9 clutch start switch and the E11 clutch start cancel switch connectors.
(b) Connect a Techstream to the DLC3.
(c) Turn the ignition switch ON.
(d) Turn the tester ON.
(e) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Starter Signal.
(f) Check the value displayed on the tester when the ignition switch is turned to the ON.
Result:
(g) Reconnect the park/neutral position switch or the clutch start switch and the clutch start cancel switch connectors.
C -- INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH
B -- INSPECT CLUTCH START SWITCH
A -- Continue to next step.
3. INSPECT ECM (STA TERMINAL VOLTAGE)
(a) Disconnect the B35 park/neutral position switch or the A9 clutch start switch and the E11 clutch start cancel switch connectors.
(b) Disconnect the B3 ECM connector.
(c) Turn the ignition switch ON.
(d) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Voltage:
HINT: For manual transmission models:
If the result is A, repair of replace the wire harness between the ECM and the STA relay, the ECM and the clutch start switch and also the ECM and the clutch start cancel switch.
(e) Reconnect the park/neutral position switch or the clutch start switch and the clutch start cancel switch connectors.
(f) Reconnect the ECM connector.
B -- REPLACE ECM
A -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ECM - STA RELAY - PNP SWITCH OR CLUTCH START SWITCH)
4. INSPECT CLUTCH START SWITCH
(a) Disconnect the A9 clutch start switch connectors.
(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance:
Result:
(c) Reconnect the clutch start switch connector.
B -- INSPECT CLUTCH START CANCEL SWITCH
A -- Continue to next step.
5. REPLACE CLUTCH START SWITCH
(a) Replace the clutch start switch.
NEXT -- Continue to next step.
6. INSPECT CLUTCH START CANCEL SWITCH
(a) Inspect the clutch start cancel switch Clutch Start Cancel Switch.
Result:
B -- INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH
A -- Continue to next step.
7. REPLACE CLUTCH START CANCEL SWITCH
(a) Replace the clutch start cancel switch.
NEXT -- Continue to next step.
8. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH
(a) Disconnect the A1 ignition switch connectors.
(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance:
HINT: If the result is OK, repair or replace the wire harness between the ignition switch and the clutch start switch and also the ignition switch and the clutch start cancel switch.
(c) Reconnect the ignition switch connector.
NG -- REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH
OK -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (IGNITION SWITCH - CLUTCH START SWITCH)
9. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH
(a) Disconnect the B35 Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connectors.
(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance:
