Starter Signal Circuit






2AR-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: Starter Signal Circuit

DESCRIPTION

While the engine is being cranked, current flows from terminal ST1 of the ignition switch to the park/neutral position switch assembly (automatic transaxle models) or clutch pedal switch assembly (manual transaxle models) and also flows to terminal STA of the ECM (STA Signal).

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

NOTICE:
Inspect the fuses for circuits related to this system before performing the following inspection procedure.

HINT
This chart is based on the premise that the engine can crank normally. If the engine cannot crank normally, proceed to the Problem Symptoms Table Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures.

PROCEDURE

1. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream on.

(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Starter Signal.

(e) Read the value.

OK:





NG -- INSPECT RELAY (ST RELAY VOLTAGE)
OK -- Continue to next step.

2. INSPECT STARTER ASSEMBLY

(a) Inspect the starter assembly Testing and Inspection.

NG -- REPLACE STARTER ASSEMBLY
OK -- Continue to next step.

3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - STARTER ASSEMBLY)

(a) Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.





(b) Disconnect the starter assembly connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance (Check for Open):





Standard Resistance (Check for Short):





(d) Reconnect the starter assembly connector.

(e) Reinstall the ST relay.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

OK -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (BATTERY - STARTER ASSEMBLY)

4. INSPECT RELAY (ST RELAY VOLTAGE)

(a) Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.





(b) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Voltage:





Result:





(c) Reinstall the relay.

C -- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY - ST RELAY)

B -- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY - ST RELAY)

A -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - ECM)

5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY - ST RELAY)

(a) Disconnect the park/neutral position switch assembly connector.





(b) Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance (Check for Open):





Standard Resistance (Check for Short):





(d) Reconnect the park/neutral position switch assembly connector.

(e) Reinstall the ST relay.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.

6. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

(a) Inspect the park/neutral position switch assembly Inspection.

NG -- REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
OK -- Continue to next step.

7. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH - IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY)

(a) Disconnect the ignition switch assembly connector.





(b) Disconnect the park/neutral position switch assembly connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance (Check for Open):





Standard Resistance (Check for Short):





(d) Reconnect the ignition switch assembly connector.

(e) Reconnect the park/neutral position switch assembly connector.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.

8. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY - ECM)

(a) Disconnect the ignition switch assembly connector.





(b) Disconnect the ECM connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance (Check for Open):





Standard Resistance (Check for Short):





(d) Reconnect the ignition switch assembly connector.

(e) Reconnect the ECM connector.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.

9. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

(a) Inspect the ignition switch assembly Ignition Switch (w/o Smart Key System).

NG -- REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

OK -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (BATTERY - IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY)

10. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY - ST RELAY)

(a) Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.





(b) Disconnect the clutch pedal switch assembly connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance (Check for Open):





Standard Resistance (Check for Short):





(d) Reinstall the ST relay.

(e) Reconnect the clutch pedal switch assembly connector.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY - ST RELAY)
OK -- Continue to next step.

11. INSPECT CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY

(a) Inspect the clutch pedal switch assembly Inspection.

NG -- REPLACE CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY
OK -- Continue to next step.

12. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY - IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY)

(a) Disconnect the clutch pedal switch assembly connector.





(b) Disconnect the ignition switch assembly connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance (Check for Open):





Standard Resistance (Check for Short):





(d) Reconnect the clutch pedal switch assembly connector.

(e) Reconnect the ignition switch assembly connector.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY - IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY)
OK -- Continue to next step.

13. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

(a) Inspect the ignition switch assembly Ignition Switch (w/o Smart Key System).

NG -- REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

OK -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (BATTERY - IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY)

14. REPLACE STARTER ASSEMBLY Removal

15. REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

16. REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (BATTERY - STARTER ASSEMBLY)

17. REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - ECM)

18. REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY Removal

19. REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

20. REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (BATTERY - IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY)

21. REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY - ST RELAY)

22. REPLACE CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY Removal

23. REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY - IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY)
