Applicability

Introduction





Some 2010 model year North American built Highlander vehicles may exhibit a condition where the rear bumper is gapped or uneven at the left and/or right corners under the tail lamp. Follow the procedures in this bulletin to address this condition.

Production Change Information





This TSB applies to 2010 MY North American built (WMI = 5TD) Highlander vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown.

Repair Procedure





1. Inspect the bumper corners between point A and B.

^ If gap or unevenness is greater than 0.8 mm (0.03 in.) proceed to step 2.

^ If gap or unevenness is less than 0.8 mm (0.03 in.) STOP - no repairs are necessary.





2. Remove screw at the forward edge of the rear bumper.





3. Remove lower bumper retaining screw.





4. Pull bumper cover away from quarter panel.





5. Add dense felt material (5 x 5 x 5 mm [0.2 x 0.2 x 0.2 in.]) from the Interior Noise Kit (PIN 08231-00801) to the tuning bump on the bumper tab as shown.





6. Add a plastic shim or stainless steel washer to bumper attachment at retainer.

7. Confirm if gap or unevenness is below 0.8 mm (0.03 in.) maximum.

^ YES - Repair is complete.

^ NO - Proceed to step 8.

8. Replace parts as described below.

A. For vehicles with a production date BEFORE June 2010 replace the rear bumper bar energy absorber and bumper cover.

B. For vehicles with a production date of June 2010 or LATER replace the bumper cover.

9. Confirm that gap or unevenness is below 0.8 mm (0.03 in.) maximum.
