DESCRIPTION

While the engine is being cranked, current flows from terminal ST1 of the ignition switch to the park/neutral position switch (for automatic transaxle) or clutch pedal switch (for manual transaxle) and also flows to terminal STA of the ECM (STA Signal).

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT
This chart is based on the premise that the engine can crank normally. If the engine cannot crank normally, proceed to the problem symptoms table Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures.

PROCEDURE

1. INSPECT TERMINAL VOLTAGE (ST RELAY TERMINAL)

(a) Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.





(b) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard voltage:

HINT
The engine does not crank because the relay is not installed.

(c) Reinstall the ST relay.

NG -- INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
OK -- Continue to next step.

2. INSPECT ST RELAY

(a) Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.





(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard resistance:





(c) Reinstall the ST relay.

NG -- REPLACE ST RELAY
OK -- Continue to next step.

3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - BODY GROUND)

(a) Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.





(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard resistance:

(c) Reinstall the ST relay.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - BODY GROUND)
OK -- Continue to next step.

4. INSPECT TERMINAL VOLTAGE (ST RELAY TERMINAL)

(a) Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.





(b) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard voltage:

(c) Reinstall the ST relay.

NG -- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY)
OK -- Continue to next step.

5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - STARTER)

(a) Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.

(b) Disconnect the starter connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard resistance:





(d) Reconnect the starter connector.

(e) Reinstall the ST relay.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - STARTER)

OK -- REPAIR OR REPLACE STARTER ASSEMBLY

6. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY)

(a) Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.

(b) Disconnect the ignition switch connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard resistance (Check for open):





Standard resistance (Check for short):





(d) Reinstall the ST relay.

(e) Reconnect the ignition switch connector.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY)
OK -- Continue to next step.

7. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

(a) Disconnect the ignition switch assembly connector.





(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard resistance:

(c) Reconnect the ignition switch assembly connector.

NG -- REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY Components
OK -- Continue to next step.

8. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH)

(a) Remove the ST relay from the engine room relay block.

(b) Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard resistance (Check for open):





Standard resistance (Check for short):





(d) Reinstall the ST relay.

(e) Reconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ST RELAY - PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH)
OK -- Continue to next step.

9. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

(a) Inspect the park/neutral position switch assembly (U151E: , U151F: Inspection).

Result:





C -- REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH Components

B -- REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
A -- Continue to next step.

10. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH - IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY)

(a) Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.

(b) Disconnect the ignition switch assembly connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard resistance (Check for open):





Standard resistance (Check for short):





(d) Reconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.

(e) Reconnect the ignition switch assembly connector.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH - IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY)
OK -- Continue to next step.

11. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

(a) Disconnect the ignition switch assembly connector.





(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard resistance:

(c) Reconnect the ignition switch assembly connector.

NG -- REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY Components
OK -- Continue to next step.

12. INSPECT FUSE (AM1 FUSE)

(a) Remove the AM1 fuse from the instrument panel junction block.





(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

(c) Reinstall the AM1 fuse.

NG -- REPLACE FUSE (AM1 FUSE)
