POWER ASSIST SYSTEMS: POWER STEERING SYSTEM: SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
1. DESCRIPTION
(a) In the Variable Flow Control (VFC) power steering system, the power steering ECU obtains the steering signal, the steering zero point memory, the steering speed, the vehicle speed signal, and the engine speed signal through the CAN communication system, and controls the power steering solenoid valve that is mounted on the power steering pump in response to conditions such as turning or not turning (driving straight) in order to supply optimal power steering flow volume.
Furthermore, without regard to whether or not the vehicle is being turned, if the power steering ECU cannot obtain the steering signal, the steering zero point memory, the vehicle speed signal, or the engine speed signal, the EPS warning light in the combination meter illuminates and the vehicle enters a fail-safe mode. During fail-safe control, resistance at the steering wheel increases drastically to inform the driver that the vehicle is in a fail-safe mode.
