Applicability

Introduction

Some 2009 - 2010 model year 2WD Tacoma vehicles may display a small transmission fluid leak through the driveshaft (propeller shaft) slip yoke plug in the center of the yoke. Manufacturing process changes were implemented at the supplier to reduce the possibility of this condition. Replacement of the driveshaft will correct this condition.

APPLICABLE WARRANTY

^ This repair is covered under the Toyota Powertrain Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 60 months or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

^ Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in this bulletin.





Required Tools & Equipment

Repair Procedure





1. Confirm source of automatic transmission fluid leak is through the driveshaft slip yoke plug in the area indicated in Figure 1.

^ If transmission fluid leak is NOT originating in this area do NOT perform this TSB.

^ If leak originates from driveshaft yoke go to step 2.

2. Replace the rear driveshaft.





Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS) applicable model year Tacoma Repair Manual:

NOTICE

To prevent damage or contamination of the drives haft slip yoke or dust cover, follow the recommendations below:

^ Do NOT touch the driveshaft slip yoke shaft with bare hands.

^ Be careful NOT to damage the driveshaft slip yoke or dust cover by hitting or contacting other objects.

^ Be careful NOT to let the driveshaft slip yoke or dust cover contact the ground or a dirty surface prior to installation.

^ Store parts indoors in a clean, dry location prior to installation.

HINT

To accurately confirm an oil leak after installation, wipe any oil or residue from the inside or outside surfaces of the driveshaft slip yoke or dust covers prior to installation.

3. Check transmission fluid level. Add WS ATF as needed to correctly adjust transmission fluid level and ensure transmission fluid is full.

NOTICE

Failure to properly adjust transmission fluid can cause transmission shifting issues, damage to automatic transmission, or MIL "ON" with transmission performance DTC(s) such as P2714, P0751, P0756, P0766, P0776, or P0894.

4. Test drive vehicle and confirm normal transmission shifting.
