To reduce compressor noise in 1984-1985 Vanagon vehicles equipped with factory installed air conditioners, it will be necessary to replace the present air conditioner refrigerant hose clamps (fig.. 1) with rubber covered clamps installed on rubber mounts.

Legend

A - Low pressure hose on luggage panel

B - Low and high pressure hose on long member

C - Low pressure hose (evaporator-condensor)

D - Receiver/drier high pressure hose

E - High pressure/low pressure hose

F - High pressure hose (compressor-condensor)

G - High pressure hose (compressor-condensor)
- 160 mm on edge
Tools required

- Electric Drill
- 9.8 mm (25/64 in.) Drill Bit
- 6.5 mm (17/64 in.) Drill Bit
- Avdel (C) Rivet Tool or equivalent



Alternate Method

- one 6 mm x 40 mm bolt with threads all the way to head
- one 6 mm nut
- one 6 mm (I.D.) x 15 mm bushing

Work sequence

- remove present clamp(s) and screw(s)
- enlarge existing hole to 9.8 mm (25/64 in.) when using rivet nuts or
- enlarge existing hole to 6.5 mm (17/64 in.) when using 6 mm nut (without rivet nut)

- insert rubber mount
- install replacement clamp around refrigerant hose and fasten to rubber mount

Clamp locations (fig. 1) and required parts

Low and high pressure hose mounted on luggage panel (A)

- enlarge existing hole to 6.5 mm (17/64 in.)
- use one rubber mount - Part No. 253 260 275
- two #26 clamps - Part No. N 20 610.2
- two 6 mm nuts - Part No. N 11 006.2

Low pressure and high pressure hose mounted on long member center (B)

- enlarge existing holes to 9.8 mm (25/64 in.)
- use three rivet nuts - Part No. N 902 521.01
- three rubber mounts - Part No. 253 260 275
- six #26 clamps - Part No. N 20 610.2
- three 6 mm nuts - Part No. N 11 006.2

Low pressure hose (evaporator to compressor) mounted on crossmember - outer center (C)

- enlarge existing hole in crossmember to 6.5 mm (17/64 in.)
- use one rubber mount Part No. 803 121 275a
- one #26 clamp - Part No. N 20 610.2
- two nuts - Part No. N 11 006.8

Receiver/drier high pressure hose mounted to bracket (D)

- enlarge existing holes to 9.8 mm (25/64 in.)
- mount bracket of receiver/drier on four rubber mounts - Part No. 803 121 275a
- use four nuts - Part No. N 11 006.2 and four rivet nuts - Part No. N 902 521.01
- using existing sheet metal screw, replace clamp with new #26 clamp - Part No. N20 610.2

High pressure/low pressure hose on crossmember - left (E)

- enlarge existing hole to 6.5 mm (17/64 in.)
- use one rubber mount - Part No. 253 260 275
- two #26 clamps - Part No. N 20 610.2
- two nuts - Part No. N 11 006.2

High pressure hose compressor to condensor mounted on front long member (F)

- enlarge existing holes to 9.8 mm (25/64 in.)
- use two rubber mounts Part No. 253 260 275
- use two rivet nuts - Part No. N 902 521.01
- use one #26 clamp - Part No. N 20 610.2 and two #20 clamps - Part No. N 20 625.1
- two nuts - Part No. N 11 006.8
High pressure hose (compressor to condensor) mounted 160 mm from front edge of long member (G)

Note

The condensor/evaporator pipe is not fastened to frame.
