Drain and Fill (Refill) Cooling System

Cooling system, draining and filling

The cooling systems on all Volkswagon vehicles are filled at the factory with a mixture of water and an antifreeze solution (G 11) with corrosion inhibitors. Phosphate free antifreeze prevents frost and corrosion damage, the formation of chalk and in addition it raises boiling point of the water. Due to the higher boiling point the coolant is an aid to operational efficiency when operating at full load, particularly in tropical climates.

Caution: Coolant antifreeze must not be reused when replacing cylinder head or cylinder head gasket, radiator and heater core. Dispose of used coolant properly.

When replacing coolant antifreeze solution in all Volkswagen models, all model years, use phosphate free coolant antifreeze ZVW237 02

WARNING: The cooling system is pressurized when the engine is warm. When opening the expansion tank, wear gloves and other appropriate protection, cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully to relieve system pressure slowly.

Note: Phosphate-free antifreeze (G 11) can be drained into a container and reused.

Draining and Filling Coolant

Hoses (1) to be removed for draining coolant from coolant pump and thermostat housing (2):

To drain the coolant, disconnect the coolant hoses indicated.
To refill the system, first reinstall the lower radiator hoses and their clamps.

Fill level marks on coolant expansion tank:

Then fill the system with the coolant and water mixture until the level reaches the Max mark on the coolant reservoir.

Start the engine and let it idle, rechecking the coolant level after it has had a chance to circulate.
After the engine has cooled, check the coolant level and add coolant as necessary.

Note: If a radiator hose is stuck to the radiator connection by sealer, cut the old hose off the connection. Prying the hose loose may damage the connection or the radiator.

CAUTION: Do not overtighten clamps. Tighten just enough to seal. Overtightening may cause hose damage and failure.
